It was part of breeding stock brought up from the states apparently. It was only like one or two animals.

Something that's different about Alberta Beef which contributes to the taste, as well as the fact that the meat is much better and less fatty.. Most beef cattle are fed fodder and crap.. growth hormones and shit. Alberta beef are fed on a grass called "prairie scrub". It's an extremely hardy and dry grass that is so packed with nutrients the animals often don't need to be supplimented. It accounts for over half the taste alone, let alone the lack of excess fat. Grain/fodder fed cattle are more likely to pick up things like mad cow as well, because it can actually be in their food.

How do I know all this? I come from a long line of Alberta cattle ranchers. I have relatives out there now still that have tens of thousands of head. Not a single one of them ever had a problem with mad cow, but they don't feed their cattle processed garbage, either.

I personally prefer good ol' British Beef - I don't have any side effects....yet, but we won't go there, hehe.

Considering that Alberta supplies themselves, half the country of Canada and a SHITLOAD of exports to the US, I would say that maturing enough beef to meet demand isn't a problem. When I say tens of thousands of head of cattle I do mean that quite literally. There are some farms up there than have over a million head, and there is SO much prairie it's not a problem. The HUGE problem is with animals that are born and raised in slaughterhouses and fed all that crap. Honestly, they don't really need it, in fact, the results are much better without it.
