Google doesn't count meta tags at all, but it will penalize you for having too many in there. Work on the text on the site and target the keywords you want to rank for. Be sure to target narrowly towards the content on the page and the sponsor. You're not going to have luck getting mass traffic with big terms but a few targetted search results will make some good sales.

Google does read meta tags but meta tags do not influence your ranking. It is used for editorial control when there is no legible text on the page. In order, the following are used to control the way your adcopy appears in a google result:

1) DMOZ listing (first choice)
2) Direct text on the page
3) Meta tags (last resort)

Meta tags are basically used when your entire page is made up of graphics and flash or other elements which are not readable by a spider. Don't expect meta tags to influence your rankings though, just the way it appears if you're using a mostly graphical site.

I have found that google will rank you on your meta tags if you only have flash and graphics on your page.
i found this out by cloak forwarding an expired book domain to a sponsors celeb site.I used mydomain.com to do the stealth forwarding and used their provision for meta tags.Fpr 2 months I ranked no#1 for "famous celebs nude" before Google caught on .
In other search engines it is quite easy just to direct an expired domain with meta tags to a sponsor and rank in their serps.
It is a very cheap way of making money.
