Escaping the 9-5

I've got a full time job and I'm hating it. I've also got a contract going on the side, but I can't live on that alone, so...

Anyone have any work that needs to be done for 2-4 months? My skills are mainly PHP/Perl programming and *nix system administration.

Looking for 1-2 other part time contracts to pay the bills for the next couple of months while I get some ideas off the ground...

fuzebox 12-22-2003 06:46 PM

Come on guys, you know how much working for the man sucks ;)

twistyneck 12-22-2003 07:28 PM

If you hate having a job then why would anyone give you a job?

This is a good point! I wouldn't give anybody a job that just said what he did!

Neither would I but I know exactly what he means. Nothing worse than being trapped in a shitty job.

Nonetheless, if he wants to get hired he needs to learn to become more submissive and demonstrate that he will be an obedient employee who will have no greater joy in life than to please his superiors. I'm just not seeing that with this guy.

Come on now. You say your job is no different than working for somebody? I bet even if you were making $1,000/month, you would still be behind that computer, rather than look for a job that paid 5 times as much. There is no way I would go back to work with those set hours having to listen to some guy and do everything he says. I only spend 2 or 3 hours a day actually working, but I would go back to working 16 to 18 hours day if I had to, to keep from working a regular job.

I largely agree. Sometimes it is more the lifestyle than the money. It is true also offline. Many small business owners make less actual NET than some of their employees! So why contiinue? It's the "lifestyle" and you might even say "security" as strange as it sounds. Your own hours, unlimited growth potential, your own boss, etc.

But different it can be if you have kids to feed or some other such constrant where a certain amount of money is needed to live that you just aren't getting with self employment. Then you do what you must ... and probably hate it.

I came to LA to work in music studios, I still go to studios all the time, all my friends are engineers and work in studios.

Id MUCH rather be sitting in a music studio than behind a computer designing porn pages.

You are confusing making a living with being happy and content.

Am I happy designing porn? Not really, it pays the bills but no way does it make me happy.

In fact, its made me cold, and distant.

I dont like porn anymore.

If this is what you wanna do for the rest of your life, id seek help.

I wont be sitting here designing porn forever, no sane person would. Surely, no HAPPY person would...

sitting in a chair for 18 hours is hell no matter where you are sitting, that was my point.

If you dont feel like youre working you arent working hard enough.

I work minimum 15 hours a day, and im getting tired of it hahah

I was comparing having a porn business to a regular job. I don't think of a music studio as a regular job. I have a recording studio / rehearsal rooms up in Seattle. I would rather do that than get a regular job also.

Working behind a computer is not the same as a regular job. If you think working in the porn business is no different than a regular job, you would be better off getting a regular job (and no, a music studio is not a regular job). Why not get a regular job if you feel like your at a regular job anyway?

Fletch XXX 12-22-2003 09:26 PM

In that case, I have never had a regular job.

ive only worked in haunted house design and make up, art museum, and music studios

hahah

Im just saying work is work, i rather sit around with my boys drinking beer, smoke some herbs and talk about punk rock or record punk rock.

fuck work period.

heh

:thumbsup

The last job I had ended on April 19, 1997

fuzebox 12-23-2003 04:09 AM

Ok, some of you guys are misunderstanding what I was saying... I never said I don't like working.

I don't like the current company I work at, all the tech guys are getting screwed and everyone wants to leave.

What I was saying was, I want to get into contracting full time, and was looking for opportunities. That's all.
