Any snake owners here?

I just bought a ball python today. I had one years ago so I'm not new to owning a snake. Do you have a snake yourself? If so, what kind is it and how long have you had it?

funkmaster 12-21-2003 08:39 PM

I have a Ball Python named "Kaa", i've had him for 8 years. I also have a Red Tail Boa named "Max" he's 3.

Almighty your not supposed to feed your snakes in their cages or anywere they live! Your supposed to feed them in a cardboard box or a paper bag, depending on how big they are. The reason he would bite your dumb ass is cause every time you stuck your hand in there to pick him up he mistaked your hand for a mouse or rat cause you fed him in there. That's why he would stike at you. :1orglaugh

We couldn't feed Monty anywhere BUT his terrarium. He'd strike at us for trying to pick him up if he was hungry. Feed him, and he's all about snuggling in a lap. He'd just wrap himself around your arm up to the bicep and just sit there until you stripped his scaly ass off and back into his terrarium. He was such a ladies' snake. :)

Picked up a Black Mexican King Snake about 4 months ago.

He's only about a foot long right now...but is still young.

Is that Photoshop? I have only seen my snakes eat head first. Great fucking picture though:thumbsup

Rictor 12-22-2003 02:36 AM

Snake meat tastes good. Wouldn't want one as a pet though.

FireFoz 12-22-2003 02:50 AM

I have 2 boa's and 2 ratsnakes. I usually feed my boa female in her cage since she's a pain in the ass when I feed her...she strikes at everything that moves and when I get her out of the cage, feed her, then it's a real job to get her back in that cage without getting bitten lol.

Here's a pic of her, a few months ago

As you can see Danny, its not that usual that a snake eats head first

... do you kill the rats/kittens before you give them to the snakes, or do you let the snakes do the job ??

Kittens WTF? Who uses kittens? I personally don't kill them, I throw the rat's in there alive, it's in the snakes blood to hunt live prey. Although I do know people who will kill them or throw them against the wall to daze them. The reason most people do this is because rats are fighters and they will fight to the end, their claws are very sharp and when they are struggling in the snakes grip they claw the shit out of them sometimes, and it leaves very ugly scars on the snakes. If the live rats do that to my snakes I usually stick my hand in there and give the rat a good finger flick on the head to stop him from cutting my snake.

I have rats in my fridge..if i had living rats then that would be fine with me too but keeping rats alive is not really something i want to spend my time on so i just buy about 50 frozen rats every now and then.
I wouldn't dare giving kitten to my snakes since they got pretty shapr claws which could pretty much hurt my snakes and leaves scars, just like Danny said with the rats

Awesome! Mine got to about 12 feet. She was feeding on Jumbo Rabbits before I gave her up. Real sweetheart though. Never struck, never got pissed, just hung out all the time. She would go anywhere with you. I used to take her for walks around the block. Freaked the neighbors out.

I never really had a mean snake. Not even the Reticulateds.
:thumbsup

I'm debating whether to feed my ball python live or dead rodents. The ball python I had many years ago ate live rats.

I remember when that snake got very sick and I tossed a medium sized rat in there for him to dine on. He wasn't in much of an eating mood that day but he did investigate the rat. The rat tapped the snake on the nose with its paws and built a barricade with the mulch. The little bastard had the nerve to hide behind the barricade and drink the snakes water from his waterbowl.

I had to physically remove the fucker from the tank since the rat was enjoying himself too much.

Luc 12-22-2003 08:16 AM

i had a snake a few years ago. i never remember what the
fuck it was, python or some bullshit, but this thing grew to
about 9 1/2 feet in length and was mad fat. it got so bad
that when I entered into my place one day and noticed that
the top of the glass cage was open, i fucking ran shitting in my
pants.

this fucker got so big that he could probably kill my fat ass
if he wanted (obviously not eat me, but tie himself around
my neck and bye bye).

i finally got tired of being afraid to sleep at night and i gave it
away to some college kids at UIC..

too bad i don't have any pictures. the bitch who sold it to me
said he wouldn't get any longer than 5 feet, boy was she wrong.

Why do you guys give them up after they reach 12ft, etc. in length? Although they're VERY LARGE at that point, what reasons other than size/length did you have to get rid of your snake?

Head 12-22-2003 08:21 AM

I don't have one but my niece did; Bowa named 'crusher' 8' long! Had him around me a few times!

more hassle than anything else...friggin rabbits stacked up in the freezer, relatives all claiming it freaked them out to come over, etc. stuip shit really, but then it is JUST a snake...

also, to comment on the live feeding...BAD idea...with a snake that will get BIG, like retics or the burmesse, colmibian, etc...you REALY do not want a snake that big getting used to the idea of going after a moving object whenever it's cage door is open. AND the sanke can be injured by a live rodent...they can and do bite while they are being eaten. lost a your retic to a rat bit. learned my lesson...

I have had a Ball Python for over 7 years now, I got him when he was 3 from a friend of a friend. He must be one of the best pets I've ever had. Very low maintanance, and super affectionate, especially when it comes to women with long hair. Slick will climb on up, wrap around the girls neck and just chill. The women love it, say it's like a massage, and not once has he ever squeezed too tight. Hell even Hone has done cam shows with him. The members/guests love it.

I am looking for instructions on building a large cage though. He's got an ok sized one, but it's made of wood and he has a thing about dumping his water bowl while slithering into it. If any of you have some good diagrams/instructions, that would be grrreat, hit me up on ICQ 311230248.

Thank you and may you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy Hollidays!!

I have a Mexican Black Kingsnake named Pepe.

He looks exactly like this one:
http://gallery.kingsnake.com/data/39800zena4.JPG

He's about 3 1/2 feet long right now and probably won't get much bigger.

I always feed him live mice in a separate cage from where he lives. When I first got him I would put the mouse into the cage that he lives in, but there are too many hiding places in there and it would be high drama watching the snake chase around the mouse and the mouse trying to hide everywhere.

I've only seen him swallow a mouse tail first once, and that was when the mouse was pretty small it didn't cause any problems. But usually after killing the little guy, he searches all around for the head before trying to swallow him.
