The fall of GFY
 

I was reading the thread about creating a business only restricted forum, leaving out all the newbs and surfers that hang out here. Everyone seems to like the idea, and are willing to pay for it. I think Lensman should think about this... GFY is the best right now, but every empire falls (yes, even USA will fall).
I see new boards poping up everywhere, I get mails and ICQs inviting me to join, but I'm not even looking at it. But maybe I should... if I find all the familliar GFY characters there, minus the noob bullshit, who knows? Maybe I'll drop by GFY a lot less if I'm doing better business somewhere else.

So, Lensman, please create a place in GFY where threads dont disappear in 30 minutes, where I dont get flooded with all the news on CNN, where morons dont bump 2 year old threads, etc....
How do we chose those that can join? Post count is not an option. It should be a number of things. Register date, post count, proof of age, maybe a small fee.... and a permanent ban if you act like an idiot after strike 1 and 2.

What do you think? Should we improve GFY and keep it at the top for serious adult webmasters, or should we start looking at other boards for business and keep GFY for laughs?

okie how about we just say anyone getting payed per post just gets banned?

Lensman makes good money from this and its his responbility how this board looks. He has no problems with newbies, paid sigs, etc then so be it. I dont see how we should cough up money for a sub board....ridiculous.

This is what happens with a subforum.
20 pageviews per post and maybe 1 or 2 people will do real business.

This is gfy, the reason why so many people are here and why everybody has the urge to return 30 times a day is because off all the drama, hatred, fights, stupidity. If only real business threads were allowed this board would be a ghost town within weeks.

A members' by invite board would be the best idea -
True - There is so much crap here at times It is far too dificult to find the useful threads -
But - Even an invite board would include certain "must have" webmasters who simple can not control their verbal liquid shit at times.

Difficult situation - But certain this has to be addressed sooner rather than later before serious webmasters look elswhere.

Who said ONLY business threads alowed? Keep the main forum like it is, just create a smaller place where we do business with people that we know and trust.

Keep the drama, keep the newbies that want to learn, keep the morons that make us laugh, keep it all! But dont mix it with the serious stuff. If someone has a good business deal that is important to 10% of GFY users and has no drama factor in it, it will be gone in minutes, you may never see it and miss a good deal.

The only reason I mentioned a SMALL fee, is because worthless "webmasters" and kids will stay away from anything that requires a payment, even if it's a one time SMALL fee. And that would be for access to the business forum only, not GFY as a whole.

And those that believe 500 newbies posting 16h/day is awesome... if the top webmasters would leave GFY, the newbies would follow. Just think, when The Hun makes a post, it makes the day for a LOT of people just the thrill of being in the same thread. It's the mix of top biz characters, newbies that want to learn, and assholes, that makes GFY what it is. If GFY loses value for the top webmasters, it will fall. I'm not saying it's about to happen, but it could. A lot of people want to take GFY's place, and all they have to do is get the big fish to post in their board, the rest will follow.
And the sponsors too, who will pay big bucks to show adds to a bunch of people posting crap?
GFY has to be valuable for everyone. Big or small. It has entertainment value, news value (I read it here before I see it on tv), but most important, it must have biz value, and that is dropping. Give us a biz forum and we'll stick with GFY forever :thumbsup

You know he can set up a business only restricted forum here for free. All he would have to do is give the passes out to the people who are not new and the ones he knows. I think adult webmasters are cheap and wouldnt pay but I think that would be a great idea.

Because we use Lensman's board, love it, and make money from it. I dont want to create a new one, and I dont want to move. Just because GFY is great, doesnt mean it cant get better.

Ok... I was the first to mention paying in this thread, I started it, and I said it twice: I was talking about a small fee, one time only.
Something that would prove you're over 18, at least have a credit card, and are serious about the board, not passing by. This would be one of the several factors necessary to pick the webmasters interested in doing real business here.

If anyone finds that paying that small fee is so wrong, that's probably the guys we dont want inside the biz area.

I do agree paying works as a great filter.

A filter is the last thing Lensman wants.

What I find is ruining this board is the attack-dog board personalities. I would never post ANYTHING about my business because it's putting a big bullseye on myself. People on here are vicious. I would never give up any information about myself to anyone on this board. I don't want anyone fucking with my money, therefore I keep my shit on the down-low. That was just stupid. You seem to know a lot, yet you know nothing. I have no special place in this board. I am not a top webmaster or an elaborate board character, I am not a noob either. I am amongst the dozens of webmasters that do business on GFY. The more money I make, the less time I can spend on the boards. GFY is a nice place to do biz if you refresh 1000 times a day, when you actually do some work it becomes impossible to find the interesting posts on GFY.

If you dont post any of your business info and dont care about Lensman's board, go fuck yourself, I dont care about you either.

I am a member of a mainstream site where people post their pictures. To keep the site as clean as possible they charge a one time small fee. I payed it without thinking twice. Actually, take a look at it, it's pretty cool: http://www.thousandimages.com/ You can see it, but members can post and vote for the pics that get on the site.

I understand your point, and the idea of spending a little money to make a lot more. I'm just a nut for free speech, I guess, and the idea of paying for it doesn't sit well with me, I think there are better ways to initially deal with problems here.

For example, if I had access to the IP Deny function on this site, maybe I could have killed the bots pulling up old posts. Someone should be available to do it around the clock, that's the first step I think, and I think there are plenty of people here who could be available, trusted, and willing to do it.

If that utterly fails, then maybe talk about restrictions. But not until a proper staffing is tried, like other popular boards have.
