The version I saw about 5 months ago had a fat toolbar on the right hand side, litterally using 1/4 of the screen.. i kinda liked it

Longhorn will probably be the first version of Windows to make use of the Palladium technology, reason enough for me to stay very far away from it...

you do realize that you can change your shell completely in any verson of windows....

You don't have to use explorer.exe, My machine has a profile running a different shell. you can't even tell its windows.

Um.. you've obviously never tryed a shell then.

You can create and use plugins just like with linux GUIs.

I have used litestep and some of the other ones but always end up with my good ol' explorer.exe

Hindsight 12-19-2003 05:12 PM

But isnt the only good thing about Windows the easy to navigate interface?

You can get an interface just as easy to navigate for Linux or BSD...

I actually havn't tried any shells for over a year so i'm not sure what all is out there. BB looks pretty damn slick, almost like Windows X or something.. i'll have to check that out :)

You can use all the linux blackbox templates without porting them, and theres no explorer running. Theres lots of customizing involved but once you have it set up it destroys explorer.

jesus.... they should rename it to Windows Big Headache.

Nathan 12-19-2003 05:57 PM

Longhorn is actually going to be quite amazing.

Do not forget, the stuff floating around is VERY VERY alpha stuff. The GUI is not even close to finished, it is likely to change a lot.

Longhorn is the FIRST version since windows NT that has a 100% rewritten kernel. Most of the rest of the system is rewritten also. Its looking like it will be a very powerful version.

But lets wait 2 more years and judge it when the first real beta surfaces...

In it's full form, it would give m$ almost complete control over your pc, enabling them to disable programs and documents you have on your pc.
