IM question

ok! I use aol IM and ICQ...IM now has these annoying video clip adds that periodically start playing in the top of the buddy list. They have come on and startled me while sleeping, while I am on the telephone and stuff like that. How do I get rid of that or at LEAST make it MUTE?!
