Poorly Chosen Domain Name - ROFL

A good example of really bad marketing...

PowerGen is a large company in England that sells electricity.

They've formed a division in Italy.

They went for the obvious company name and that's what
they registered the domain under.

International markets are fun for just this reason.

Years ago Chevy made car and it was called, "Nova", we Americans loved it but in spanish speaking markets it meant, "No Good" or something like that...and they D/C making that car as a result.

But your example tops the market, thats funny :1orglaugh

Maybe you mean pinto, or maybe there is two, because Ford was wondering why the pinto was doing terrible in mexico, then they found out it mean small male genitalia :1orglaugh

Edit: it was Brazill "Ford sales of its Pinto car was a disaster in Brazil. Pinto was Brazilian slang for "small male genitals". They had to completely rebadge all the cars with a new name "Corcel" which means horse."

Actually, I believe that NOVA was translated as "No Go" or "Doesnt Go"... Either way it just proved their international planning didnt extend too far. :)

Wankenstein 12-19-2003 01:27 PM

"no-va" means "dosen't go" in spanish, they re-named it the apollo.

There is a drug store chain in California called Savon.

Many years ago, they changed their name to Osco Drugs.

Osco, in spanish, means to puke violently.

They changed it back to Savon.

I can't believe nobody's brought up the fact (or is it urban legend?) that the Chinese translation of "Coke adds life" was, roughly, "Bite the wax tadpole".

Edit: Damn, I just spoiled all our fun. Look here if you want to be spoiled...
