Earth's Magnetic Field Weakens 10 Percent

...and other interesting news...

SAN FRANCISCO - The strength of the Earth's magnetic field has decreased 10 percent over the past 150 years, raising the remote possibility that it may collapse and later reverse, flipping the planet's poles for the first time in nearly a million years, scientists said Thursday.

At that rate of decline, the field could vanish altogether in 1,500 to 2,000 years, said Jeremy Bloxham of Harvard University.

Hundreds of years could pass before a flip-flopped field returned to where it was 780,000 years ago. But scientists at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union cautioned that scenario is an unlikely one.

Such a lull could still have significant effects, especially in regions where the weakening is most pronounced.

Over the southern Atlantic Ocean, a continued weakening of the magnetic field has diminished the shielding effect it has locally in protecting the Earth from the natural radiation that bombards our planet from space, scientists said.

As a result, satellites in low-Earth orbit are left vulnerable to that radiation as they pass over the region, known as the South Atlantic anomaly.

Among the satellites that have fallen prey to the harmful effects was a Danish satellite designed, ironically, to measure the Earth's magnetic field, Bloxham said.

The weakening ? if coupled with a subsequently large influx of radiation in the form of protons streaming from the sun ? can also affect the chemistry of the atmosphere, said Charles Jackman of NASA (news - web sites)'s Goddard Space Flight Center.

That can lead to significant but temporary losses of atmospheric ozone, he said.

Me too. :winkwink:

But I kind of like to think the earth's magnetic field is a constant...now I don't have that reassurance. LoL.

Thanks...it's not all adult related obviously, but it's stuff I find interesting. :thumbsup

I read one article that said they were pretty sure it had happened at least once while man was on Earth and nothing had been found in the archaeologic records (so far) that it had really adversely affected man.

Some of the lower IQ's might want to tie on an anchor tho if it happens again lest they float in to space. lol

The flip will occur within our lifetime to the next 1000 years. Scientists have stated there is no doubt about it at the present rate of reduction.

I had a good post link on this a month ago if you want to find it.

Its not so bad when it flips. We'll just have to reverse everything that was labeled North to South and vice versa.

The fucked up part is the actual flip which can be fast, about 1 month to long over a year or so. During that is where the problems arise, because everything will be in transistion and not stabile.

Anything related to navigation will be completely out of sync. Property lines will all become inaccurate which will create enormous real estate legal issues. Planes won't be able to fly right.

The weather will be completely horrendous and this is the real threatening component. Without the magnetic shield the earth will get bombarded with lethal gamma rays. Virtually all the satellites we have will get fried, which means there goes the world's communications network based on sats. And humans will have cancer developing in unheard of cases. Food cells will get mutated. Animals will be lost without the ability to navigate. The power grid will get messed up.

Just about everything we do that relates to electronics and communications will have sever problems.

Lets sum it up this way. You won't want to be on Earth during the flip. Everything will be a nightmare to deal with.

On the bright side, look at it as 10% weight loss :winkwink:

I don't think the human race will last that long... I think we will kill each other off within the next 500 years.

I always come across some crazy articles, and as often as I can I post them here...

That way I have them all in one place, for my own use and the use of others. :winkwink:

I about have to agree with you. Who knows though? The things that happen in the next century could determine a whole lot.
