cut a pen in half and chew on it/hang it out of your mouth like its a cig

***warning*** I got addicted to pens, if you dont actually quit you'll have half a pen on one side of your mouth and a cig hanging out the other. but it helped a little.

I just made myself two New Years Resolutions...one to quit and the other to stick to my resolutions. This was in 1999 and 5 years later I'm still cigarette free. I started smoking cigs at 14 and figured at that point that enough was enough.

If I was still smoking now, I'd probably be in the process of quitting. We can't smoke in public places here in NY. My buddy's bar has lost 40% of their revenue the past 5 months as a result of this shit fucking law.

LadyMischief 12-18-2003 05:04 PM

carrot sticks, trident gum (the stuff that cleans your teeth) and lots of tall glasses of water

I would help you out and give you hints, but in the past year I quit 4 times! It depends what addiction you have also, like me, I get bored and need something to do, so I smoke, others are the nicotine.

But I have always been able to put that down... cigs on the other hand... 24 hours was the longest I have ever gone... but I had the help of the other and I think that helped get me through those 24 hours. :winkwink:

I'm a 10 year veteran. And smoked for 11 years. I quit cold turkey and i took it day by day. Tell yourself that it wont taste good if you take a drag.
Good luck:smokin

Rictor 12-18-2003 05:32 PM

I was born with a high IQ so I never took up smoking.

anidifranco 12-18-2003 05:36 PM

eating and sleeping, the only thing to do.
I gained 30 lbs the first year I quit

I do not understand those things... they contain nicotine, right? so, if I am trying to quit, why would I want to keep putting the drug I am trying to stop into my body? Just does not make sense to me. but hey... willing to give it a try.

because it will prevent you from smoking cigarettes. Youll begin to feel better, have more energy, look better, etc. giving you more and more reasons not to start up again.

Yeah, i know . It sucked majorly, but the american cancer society statistics say that they on average people who quit smoking have only gained 5lbs. after 2 years.

I guess they all get fat like I did the first year, then spend the second year losing it. :(

anidifranco 12-18-2003 05:53 PM

i had tried it all - the patch, the pills, the gum, the lozenges, the nocotrol inhaler, the marijuana cigarette replacement.

Cold turkey finally worked. I have a great support system - I was lucky. People kept reminding me of all the positives even when I had yelled their heads off.

When I resorted to pot to help me quit, I knew I had to just do it.

Night sweats, physical sickness, insomnia were the worst.

I've nevr had insomnia before or since, that is truly hell on earth. My doctor finally said, "You have to sleep!" He prescribed 1 valium before bed. That was the greatest thing ever.

brand0n 12-18-2003 05:53 PM

good luck man, im gonna give it a shot for new years

anidifranco 12-18-2003 05:56 PM

Also, I developed this super human ( to me) ability to smell. I could smell a bag of dog food 2 stories away. I spent about 4 months nauseated by smells.

did you want to quit? That is my problem... I like to smoke... and I do not want to quit... I just do not want to pay the high tax on the fuckers... average almost 40.00 a carton... at the airport... in the duty free shop... 15.99 per carton... WTF is that shit? Almost tempted to buy a plane ticket to like mexico, go to the duty free shop and stock up... lol

I had never wanted to quit truly before I finally did. I LOVED cigarettes. People ask me to this day, "How did someone like you who grew up knowing the dangers of smoking ever start?"
My answer is that everyone tries atleast one cigarette in their life. When I smoked my first one, I LOVED IT. It was such a powerful drug for me. As soon as I put my first one out, I wanted my second. Addictive personality maybe, I dunno. I just loved to smoke.

SoundMan 12-18-2003 06:01 PM

Drink a case of beer, then smoke around 3-4 packs of cigs all in the same night, the next moring you will either be dead or so fucking sick that you will never want one again!

anidifranco 12-18-2003 06:02 PM

I don't think I would have ever quit to save money. I did it because I wanted a long life. Suddenly my own mortality hit me like a ton of bricks.

not doing it to save money... I just think these taxes are unfair... on stupid fucker gets sick and sues, wins the case even thought there is a fucking warning right on the label..... now we all suffer from this idiot. They should have fined the tobacco companies, then froze the price per pack... afterall, they are the ones who have lied, they are the ones putting out a dangerous product.. yet the consumer suffers.

Did you know the tobacco companies got 40 million of that lawsuit settlement?

sorry... nerves are on edge... can you tell lol

anidifranco 12-18-2003 06:07 PM

No, I didn't. But I do not doubt it.

yea, big article ABC did about where all that money went... only 2% or so went to what it was meant for.. the rest ended up in the pockets of some of the richest men in america. Some states used the money for new golf carts at their country club.... cannot remember the rest... but it was a good read... and frustrating too.

This ain't gonna help you quit, but if the only reason you're trying to quit is because of the rediculous taxes we have here in AZ then go to the Native American smoke shops and get yourself a ZigZag roll-your-own kit. $9.91 per carton and it's all natural.

vapser 12-18-2003 06:27 PM

Well i still smoke but there have been times where i did not smoke, for more than 48 hours. The reason for not quitting is that you really should have some time off from working when doing it. but i have keept away from the smokes some weekends.
Best thing to do is like one of the others in here said. Sleep alot, this will help you to get more smokeless hours. and when you thinks about a smoke, you will be able to tell yourself that it would be a complete loss since you already did the first xxx hours... And BTW the erdge to smoke you get when you are trying to quit, only last about ten secounds at a time, so keept up the work and you shold be able to get smoke free.
Hope it works out for you. Quiting myself since i am having a baby, and therefore have to be careful not to hurt it in any way.

pornguy 12-18-2003 06:28 PM

yea, there were some floating around here a while back... mine, for some reason after we moved into our home 3 years ago, started picking out it's feathers and has not stopped. It is not sick, should not be stressed... it has everything a bird could want... not sure what to do... but I still love it just the same.

Yea, they are great talkers... sometimes too good... mine has picked up my bad language.. which is not a bad thing.. until my mother in law came to visit... lol

NBDesign 12-18-2003 07:09 PM

I am such a looser!!!! I broke down.... after dinner the craving hit real bad... went and bought a pack... however, I will try to strech this pack out... I have gone this long... I will wait this long plus an hour or so before another... if I can;t quit... maybe I can at least cut back.

pornguy 12-18-2003 07:15 PM

I stopped because of my bird...

They are way to fragile to have that around... I feel the pain..

We live in an area where everyone is religious. So people come over to visit, and the first thing the bird does is yell at the dogs. Sit!! God Damn it. !!! and then Fucking shit!!!

we always say that she was a rescue...

LOL... yep, my one dog will start barking and the bird yells... SHUT UP!!!!, or the phone will ring... it will say... hello, NBDesign... or it ill make that annoying beep when I have a message on the machine.

Yea, their little lungs could never handle the smoke... that is why i go outside to smoke.

Interlude 12-18-2003 07:29 PM

It's all over once you have a few drinks. Best thing you can do, honestly, is cut down to like a pack or two per week, it's not dangerous healthwise but you won't go nuts. It's fucking RARE to meet a person who quit entirely and doesn't want a smoke... remember, smoking in real moderation isn't harmful.
