I bought a Linksys Wireless-G Router/Access point. Picked it up at bestbuy for $69.99. Just plug it in, run the cd setup and seems to work great throughout my whole house & its just sitting on top of my bed, my plan was to place it high in my closet. So far the range seems to be great.Comment

I'm using the standard linksys 802.11b wireless router sitting in my basement on top of my computer and it gets great reception all over the house.
You might try upgrading your firmware on the router and maybe go to broadbandreports.com and run their 'tweak test' to see if you have any settings that could be improved.
Also I got great help from the linksys tech support line, so you might try that...

It's a good idea to use a 3rd Party encryption scheme. Wi-Fi is
very insecure. Even 128bit WEP Wi-Fi can be cracked with with
enough packet data. If you do use WEP change the encryption
key often so as packet loggers don't get enough data to break
your key. It's probably not a bad idea to change the network ID
too. However this doesn't really offer all that much extra
protection.
Also checkout http://www.realvnc.com/ remote access software.
It runs on just about everything, including PalmOS. In the past
I've done a lot of work on a palm from the lounge.

Just reading posts about reception....
It's advisable to position the antenna in an area which reduces
the amount of coverage outside of your house. For example don't
place it next to a window. There are plenty of cases of people
hacking wi-fi from kilometres away using homemade directional
antenna.
