USD is down. Would you pay in Euro ?

US $ is going down. European webmasters are loosing money when they are paid in USD.
Would you pay for any services in this biz in Euros ?
Do you feel better when paying 100 euro, or $122 ?

margarita 12-10-2003 06:57 AM

Seems that it's still too soon for US folks :)

quiet 12-10-2003 06:59 AM

I don't know how the canadian $ is doing, but if it's not going down faster than USD, it's bad for canadians too, like for europeans

a 100K USD wire is worth over 30K less than it was a couple of years ago. two wires a month, and you're out well over 60K CAD+ A MONTH, purely on exchange rate. that's why.

hostey_com 12-10-2003 07:25 AM

Who gets all the wire fees?

rooster 12-10-2003 07:27 AM

solution, stop making 95% of your money off us 'dumb americans'

Why should sponsors do this?

Surely they generate US$ sales, so if they convert that into Euro at a rate lower than the market then they are the ones losing money?

I'm not talking about sponsor.
It's about european service providers.
For example paying for content, software, traffic, ... etc

Doesn't the current situation make US exports (ie design, hosting, content) cheaper now?

Personally, i can see the current rates as beneficial for me, as i am focusing on revenue streams that are non US$ (ie Euro + £); my margins are getting better

You should stop accepting dollars from the poor Americans and switch to the Euro ASAP! Americans don't have Internet access in their mud huts anyway.

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

It's funny that the only ones who care about the dollar being low are the Europeans. I hope it keeps going lower.

:321GFY

You want to talk shit about America but keep making all your money off of us. You get what you deserve.

Reak 12-10-2003 08:29 AM

lets keep the prices in dollars

Holly 12-10-2003 09:19 AM

Special GFY Christmas USA Citizenship offer - This month only, I'll marry any non-resident for $100 dollars. Hurry! Only three left!!

(sorry, USD only)

Ron2k1 12-10-2003 10:35 AM

One day it will recover, it always does

JamesK 12-10-2003 10:47 AM

it eats my money. 20-40% loss (1 euro was 0.8 dollar a few years ago)

Gemini 12-10-2003 11:06 AM

LMAO Holly, you *know* you'll have to learn their native tongues don'tcha? It's obvious some of these guys use a translator to post... and are too lazy to learn Anglais`. :winkwink:

Ludedude 12-10-2003 11:59 AM

Here's a good solution. Why not stop whining and start charging in Euros? Go ahead. You don't need the evil dollar. There are plenty of EU people buying memberships right? What do you need the US consumer for anyway? It's not like we have any money to spend :1orglaugh

dig420 12-10-2003 01:16 PM

Somebody might have already mentioned this as I got glassy-eyed halfway down the thread BUT:

We as webmasters deal in US dollars, that's what the surfers have. How in the hell could we pay in currency trading higher than the dollar without losing our asses?

rowan 12-10-2003 01:24 PM

I'm from Australia which has similar probs. I look at it this way:

2001:
$USD10000 @0.49 = $AUD20408.16

convert it back in 2003 (now):
$AUD2040.81 @0.73 = $USD14897.96 (+48.9%)

That's an effective gain of more than 20% p/a. Great if you're investing in AUD, but I live off AUD so that means I'm LOSING that! I work harder so my USD income is rising each month, but at the end of the day the amount of AUD coming into my bank account barely changes. If it starts going backwards (with my USD income still rising) then it's time to get a haircut, and get a real job. :Graucho

That's not the point. If a German buys a membership to a site, it's translated into USD at the processor. Then the processor pays OUT USD to its clients. It doesn't matter where the traffic originates from, unless you deal with a non-American processor.

Who is talking shit about America? We're talking about your dollar falling, which is absolute fact.

I remember when the dollar was 1.71 to Canadian dollars. Now it's 1.28 at the bank, and 1.25 on my Cdn credit card. I try to keep as much in USD as possible, hoping to average out my loss, but the dollar hasn't recovered yet, so there's not much averaging going on in the positive direction. Feels like the bloody nasdaq.

Now see? I didn't mention His Lord High Excellency Bush at all :)
