Help! My host is stealing my 404 traffic?! WTF

It is pretty weird... you type in

http://dreamdesigns4u.com and the site loads fine.
Now go to http://www.dreamdesigns4u.com/m1/ and click through the pages.. since there is no join page, my own 404 page should redirect the visitors to another site, a mock tgp of mine but you'll see it goes to a site run by a US church.. how's that?
It is paid hosting and was the birthday present of an Austrian programmer friend of mine.

Oh shit. What can I do?

you got spyware...

liquidmoe 12-09-2003 09:43 PM

Hit up your host on icq or via email, they may just have a global 404 setup in Apache and if you dont have something more local either in your VirtualHost or in your .htaccess to redirect your 404 where you want it to go, it gets redirected there.

If you have trouble reaching them, just put an .htaccess into your document root which states the following:

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.yahoo.com

Are you sure you have your own .htaccess file & a 404 specified?

Some hosts have catch-all 404's, so if you dont specify your own, it will go to theirs. ...no sense in wasting 404 traffic with a blank white page.

BVF 12-09-2003 09:44 PM

my old host used to send my 404's to the host's main page. I never bothered to contact my new host since I don't really mess with 404's but it just gives you a standard 404 page.

digifan 12-09-2003 09:46 PM

I don't think it is spyware.. I have a mac and made a screenshot. And the link they send the traffic is missing an "s", it is http://www.dreamdesign4u.com and not http://www.dreamdesigns4u.com , it is odd.

Thanks I am redoing my .htacess file again.

Thanks man,

I uploaded another .htaccess and overwrote the existing file.

Who the fuck runs an adult host and redirects 404 traffic to a christian site?

Smokey The Bear  12-09-2003 09:52 PM

Looks like a hand typo :)

An Austrian paid hosting company.. the new .htaccess does not seem to work for me either.

have you contacted their tech support, any word? that would seem to be the first step.

The 2 sites are on completely different hosts. Its a hand typo in the 404 redirect

You're losing money by not redirecting that 404 traffic, send to a topsite, fpa or even back to your main page.

Exactly.. the difference is one letter only.. tricky.
I am moving that site as soon as possible.

If you go and click through the design sample links, two pages do work, the missing join page takes you to the church page. http://www.dreamdesigns4u.com/m1/ .

The .htaccess file works with extremerack as magic.
