Blocked email by spamcop.net and AOL. What can I do?
 

We have a weekly email that we have been sending out for over a year and our list is 50,000. We have never been cited for sending spam in that time. People really like the email we send and we make it easy for them to remove.

We recently worked out a deal with another group. We are sending them customers in return for affiliate commissions. Part of the deal was that they would send out our email to their list of 235,000 people.

What has happened now is that their mail IP address has been listed on www.spamcop.net so they are unable to send to the list. Also, because our URL was in the email, I can't even send a regular email to any AOL customers. I get a bounceback that our URL has received a lot of complaints.

What can I do at this point to fix this situation?

About all you can do is call SpamCop and try to get your domain removed. It's highly doubtful that they will clear the other group, but they *might* clear yours.

Getting listed for spamming sucks. I have an opt-in only, non-adult marketing company and we got listed once. It was actually a mistake, which was cool, but it still took a lot of calls and 'splaining to get us removed. It's no fucking fun...

There may be other ways to get unlisted, but I only know of that one.. YMMV.

If you have stopped the spam, you will be delisted automatically a maximum of 48 hours from the most recent spam complaint. Please do not write asking to be delisted sooner unless you believe there is some error in SpamCop's logic. Systems known to send spam are listed for up to 48 hours even if there is a "resolution" to the "issue". Often, what happens once can happen again.

Does this mean that after 2 days, we will be automatically removed? That's what it seems to say, but does that mean people can spam, get blacklisted for 2 days, spam, get blacklisted for 2 days, and on and on?

Stop the spam (reports). Barring any unusual circumstances (you receive erroneous spam reports), this is your only option. Secure open relays and kick the spammers off your servers - and keep them off!

If you have recently closed an open relay, check to see if it is listed with www.ordb.org (off site link). If it is listed, ask for a re-test. Once ordb has certified your relay as secure, return to http://spamcop.net/bl.shtml to expedite the removal of your server from the list. Or just wait the 48 hours and it will be delisted automatically.

What is the deal with "open relays?" What do I need to do to secure them?

1st off if u are blocked by aol, its not due to spam cop. and once they block you, they dont unblock you. might as well remove *@aol from your lists

you can find a mailing solution that has a contract with aol (like roving.com), but you won't be able to import your existing lists and still you will have to use another domain......
From my past small knowledge, AOL doesn't block your domain over a single complaint. It takes more than that.....

Obviously this didnt work out well, but this was due to bad handling. How sure are you that they delivered your ad in a real double/single optin list?

Our email is an informative Las Vegas email. We discuss anything Vegas. People really like our email because of the information we've got. The company with the 235,000 is a company that does Las Vegas travel reservations and their list is compiled from people who booked rooms, shows, golf, or whatever in Vegas. These people do have email preferences options and could remove themselves by logging in. Also, there is a prominent remove link in every email. When they booked their rooms, in the terms and conditions with the travel Web site, it is stated that their email may receive promotional emails and that they can unsubscribe by changing their preferences.

Hey, as far as the open ports that it was talking about is that someone else can use the server to send the spam via an open port. That is why you wnat them closed...

Go to AOL and search for the postmaster pages for e-mail. They WILL un block you if you can meet their criteria. It is not that hard to meet...

If you can not find the pages that I am talking about, let me know and I will find them for you. I have them bookmarked somewhere.
