I didnt go to school in Italy but we still learned about the roman empire. And what we learned about WW2 in school didnt start suddenly with Dec 7, 1941 when the USA became involved.

The Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor pretty much guaranteed American Involvement, which the Jews wanted desperately. I'd say the date was pretty important and is remembered as well as taught.
