Phatservers has a great in-between solution for a gallery server... its a "shared dedicated" account. They guarantee no more than 2 (i think) accounts per machine...
Lower cost like a virtual account but you get the reliability of a dedicated machine plus grade-A customer service.

For this particular situation, I'd recommend a dedicated right away. I'm selling a bunch of gallery boxes right now, I'd really like to dump them off before Christmas. So if anyone is interested, I've got 10mbps for $450.
