The Acacia Saga

I read a story a couple weeks ago that the patent office was going to determine whether they should remove the patent on the acacia video technology since it affects so many companies and the internet as a whole.

I cant find that story anywhere now.

Spunky 12-06-2003 11:21 AM

Lets hope they do....Fucking extortion artist weasels :BangBang:

Paul Markham 12-06-2003 11:31 AM

We need to crush Acacia as an industry.

This is just the first shot from the companies like Acacia, there will be more unless we show them they wil lose money coming here. So far Acacia have made money. What is to stop the next company with a fistful of bum patents?

Not Hustler and Matrix that's for sure.

I think you are referring to the story where the W3 offered a proposal to the Patent Office about invalidating all these patents that could/will cripple the development of the web.

I dont think there is anything from the Patent Office commenting on Acacia.

Acacia stock has been going up and up since the On Command merger. So dunno its not looking to good for our industry. Everybody is waiting for the court date in January. So far their are no victories for the Web.

So, all I can say is that you bought at 1.00 and sold at 8.00 to pay for the court fees... It sucks

Acacia may own the patents but that doesnt mean they can extort money from webmasters

Kick Ass Chat 12-06-2003 01:42 PM

Especially the way they are going about it.

I recieved an acacia "package" with threats of a lawsuit , that they must have just sent to every adult webmaster they found, because i dont have any video at all on the site they were complaining about.

I sent it to the FTC and the fraud squad along with my domain info for them to go see. I also gave them permission to go thru my backups to prove i have never had video on that site.

Funny thing, they called me and told me they were not going to require me to have a license.

Paul Markham 12-06-2003 03:06 PM

I have never seen such a bunch of pussies as some of you.

The patent is so broad as to be a joke and Acacia are preying they can take more money from the licensees than they spend before the judge says it's a BS patent.

This whole business works by scaring little people into paying money and telling the big guys, it's cheaper to settle than fight. Take more money than you spend and you end up with a profit. If we had all told them to :321GFY in the beginning we would never be in this situation.

Ya, he got he story mixed up with W3C and Eolas Patent.

IF, for some whatever stroke of wierd reasoning, that the court sides on Acacia's side....then the next step (besides an appeal for the defendants), would be to then go to the Patent Office to invalidate directly.

After Microsoft lost the Eolas case is when the W3C made their petition to USPTO (i am sure M$ was right there with them).

Hey, charly, I hope you hold more auctions or raffles for content in support of the fight against Acacia soon. As long as I have money available, count me in. :thumbsup
