One night I was in my parking garage waiting for the elevator. There was a couple in front of me but I couldn't see the face of the dude. It was almost as if he was purposely hiding behind his female friend. Finally the three of us stepped into the elevator and that's when I got a glimpse of the dude. It was Andrew Dice Clay. I'm sure some of you are familiar with "The Diceman" but those who of you aren't he was a hugely popular comedian/actor in the late 80's early 90's; best known for his infamous dirty nursery rhymes he was also the first and only person banned for life on MTV because of his foul mouth. I used to LOVE his stuff. Ironically I had actually paid and gone to see an Andrew Dice Clay show for the first time earlier that year. I said "Hey man...I saw you earlier this year at The Grove". He nodded and without making much eye contact told me a little bit about how that was a shitty show etc. I told him I enjoyed it and we exchanged niceties and I went on my way . Not long after that I found myself in the elevator with him again. Since he was my neighbor I casually said "Hey how ya doin?" (like I did to all the other residents there)...he didn't respond. Maybe he didn't hear me? I instinctively asked again "howfs it goin man?" no response, no eye contact. So feeling uncomfortable I just said something like "oh sorry you're havinf a bad day"....he stared straight ahead at the elevator wall and ignored me. Ya know it's a really WEIRD feeling being the only two people in an elevator and having a guy, especially a famous guy you LIKED, DIS you like that..and then having complete SILENCE after you extended a "hello" THREE TIMES....YUK! I guess he was making it clear that he didn't want to have anything to do with me LOL. However, since we lived in the same building I ran into "Dice" periodically...and made sure not to make eye contact or say "hi" to him ever again. What a neighborly guy he is! I did subsequently see him in the parking garage talking into his video cam. I guess he was working on new material; maybe for that next big TV or Movie offer :) I firmly believe that in the mainstream entertainment world a celebrity's character is key to their longevity or lack of it. What I mean is that it's the guys like Tom Cruise, John Travolta and others who gain a reputation for treating EVERYONE EQUALLY who become megastars. There are hundreds of people on movie sets and true "stars" will make EVERYONE (from the janitor to the producer) feel IMPORTANT. The power people in Hollywood; the people who actually CREATE stars; they don't want ASSHOLES. They want people everyone likes and are great to work with. Ya know, in that building I lived in - other entertainment people lived or visited there as well. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt had a friend living there. A very successful screenwriter was living in the Penthouse. How does Andrew Dice Clay know someone like little old me is not the President of Sony Pictures' SON...or one of the casting directors on his next acting job? My answer to that is HE DOESN'T. Which makes Andrew Dice Clay a DUMBASS and which probably explains why these days he can barely get an acting credit in a movie, can't fill half of a small theatre in Anaheim, CA and has been sentenced to the long list of eternal Vegas comedians. I'll bet if he knew how many naked models were hanging out in my apartment - he would have been banging my door down every week. I say be careful how you treat that "nobody" in the elevator - he could be your fan, friend or your surprise good fortune.
