Bethany Hamilton had her entire left arm bitten off by a tiger shark about a month ago... and she's back out there on the board. Now, you gonna let a little girl put you to shame?

IntenseCash 12-03-2003 12:38 PM

other way around... sharks tailfins are vertical, dolphins are horizontal. That's a dolphin. The photographer had the whole story on his site, but has since changed to some fancy Flash bullshit site so his editorial on that shot is missing now.

yes they do... I was just over in Kona in October, swimming with dolphins... and they get pretty huge.

Aaron, there's much worse things out there than dolphins and sharks.... get tangled up with a Portuguese Man-o-war and you'll be crying like a schoolgirl. :Graucho

I am sure we are saying the same thing in different ways.....sharks tail fin motion goes from left to right...either that or the Discovery Channel has been lying to me.

Ya see.....I don't fuck around with those things either.

With the recent flooding of your house and all...I fugure we can snorkel and fish in your living room. Lower risk for shark attacks and the like. :1orglaugh

NaughtyJenn 12-03-2003 12:52 PM

the next question is... why did the photographer stand there and take a picture rather than yelling and getting the guys attention or atleast start to run to get or offer some help lol instead he got a good picture :)

well, it's gotta be a zoom lens cuz the guy has to be out quite a ways... probably wouldn't have heard him if he yelled anyway. And waves roll fast... by the time you would have seen that, it would've been over. He did have a shot a few seconds later where the dolphin stuck his head out of the water though.

ahhh, movement of the tailfin, yes... you're right. Yeah, we're saying the same thing. :)

-=HOAX=- 12-03-2003 01:12 PM

That's a dolphin, but I don't think I'd have time to process that info, I'd be too busy chumming the water with peanuts and corn as I stood up and ran to shore.

sperbonzo 12-03-2003 01:15 PM

I used to surf for years, and I dive and snorkel. That's definitely a dolphin....if you look the flukes they are horizontal, not vertical (the dorsal fin shows that you are looking at it from a high angle), and the dorsal fin is curved on the back edge....shark's are straight.

Although I remember one time in San Diego when I had just wiped out, and a fin was coming at me.....I freaked out until it got within 7 or 8 feet of me and then poked his head out of the water and it was a dolphin.....What a relief!

But since then I have snorkeled and dived with sharks and dolphins quite a bit, and the sharks really aren't a big deal.

Meloman 12-03-2003 01:18 PM

I personally love the ocean and beach but for whatever reason i've never been surfing. It's definitely something I want to try if I ever get myself out to somewhere nice like Hawaii.

I live 2 blocks from Ocean Beach here in SanFrancisco but I'll never go in this water. It's freaking cold as hell and a white shark breeding ground is only like 30 miles away. Screw that!

Hawaii is whole different story. One freaking shark attack every zillion years doesn's scare me :winkwink:

Jon 12-03-2003 01:18 PM

I agree.. that is one scary thought going through that surfer's head as he's paddling towards the fucking thing.

In 1998 I was in San Diego for my first time, and decided to test out the clear warm waters with my surfing buddies at the time. I'm from NYC so I don't get to surf too often, but when I do have a chance, I jump right at it. During the day time when the waves are a bit lower than we'd like, a lot of the surfers just kinda hang out in the deeper area where the larger waves start up at. So we were all just chillin and minding our own business, when it was brought to my attention that there was a 16 foot shark swimming right underneath us. Now, the other guys were saying that they see this all the time, but for an East Coaster, looking into the water (objects may appear closer than they really are) and seeing this HUGE fucking shark, I can tell you, I've never gotten to shore quicker than that time. Also, I've never ventured out so deep since that day either. Something about the thought of a giant shark swimming underneath you, and mistaking you for lunch just doesn't seem so appealing. Perhaps I need to take up a different sport, less dangerous, like Rugby.

:2 cents:

I was out snorkeling in Molokini Crater a few weeks ago and one of the crew said he was out there on his own one day diving, and he saw a manta with a 20 foot wingspan... said he nearly shit himself. On the way back in we saw a huge manta leap out of the water.... it was awesome.

BVF 12-03-2003 01:19 PM

I'd piss in my wetsuit if I saw that

Big rays are AMAZING underwater.....so graceful and alien looking. They look like some creature out of a bad Scifi movie, especially when they're above you in the water.:thumbsup

I would think those sharks would be more afraid of you Aaron.

its a dolphin

http://www.snopes.com/photos/surfer.asp

Origins: The photograph displayed above is indeed real, but it doesn't depict the hair-raising scene most viewers think it does.

This picture was taken by photographer Kurt Jones on 9 April 2003 at Surfrider Beach in Malibu, one of California's premier surfing beaches. But as the version of the photograph posted on the web indicates, however, the ominous-looking finned creature lurking just beneath the surface of the waves is a dolphin (possibly a bottlenose), not a shark.

A subsequent photograph of the animal taken later in the day demonstrates conclusively that it was in fact a dolphin:

That happened to me fishing a few years back. Perfectly calm water like glass about a mile out to sea. There was this huge fucking spash behind me. By the time I looked I didn't see anything and it scared the crap outta me. About half an hour later I saw a manta ray jumping and realized that is what it was.

I have a bunch of shark stories but here is my dumbest one...

I was Bodyboarding at Makapu'u and a guy yells out

"BRA BRA!! FIN!! FIN!! RIGHT BEHIND YOU BRA QUICK!!"

As my board shorts get ready to turn brown I look over my shoulder expecting to see a tiger shark getting ready to take a piece outta me. Insted I see a yellow and black swim fin floating next to me. He had lost it and just wanted me to pass it back to him :)

Depending on the species of sharks. Most don't eat everything it sees, most come when there is blood in the water, the Tiger Sharks are ones to watch out for tho!

Tiger sharks and hammerheads just seem to be permanently pissed off with life. They are very aggressive.

The shark reef aquarium at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas just got a hammerhead. It is supposedly the only one in captivity. Put that on your to do list for Internext, although by then the hammerhead may be the only thing left alive in the tank :Graucho

its just the angle and the distortion through the water, all you can see is that it has some fins you cant tell which way they are going
