Help !!! - I've been hacked or something?

It seems many people are getting fake emails from "[email protected]" ...

How the hell is that possible?
The only thing I know is if I turn off the SMTP server the bounced emails stop.

Can anyone recommend an email host/supplier that can handle all my email and security upgrades and stuff.

Like - can I not just point my email server to a good company?

Help with this will never be forgotten.

My solution is just switch servers completely ...
Suppliers too ...
even though - RackShack.net (ev1.com) rocks.

Change up the DNS and the OS causing the problem.

No they cant get your passwords. They just are faking the return address so they get sent back to you if they bounce. No biggie you should be able to filter out the bounced emails.

Switching servers isnt going to help anything really. Its not from your end they are coming from.

Read the headers of the email and find out where they are coming from originally , if they arent very clever you might be able to find them, but chances are they are using proxies and you will have a hard time tracking them down.

it's just a forged recip, i wouldn't worry.

i got a ton of emails in my box from MAILER_DAEMON one day with a spam message in them. i loved it, i called my ISP just to let them know it wasn't me, but after that nothing else happened.

No you cant stop it from occuring as its just a faked email addy, unless you can track down who is doing it.

If your getting "flooded" with them and its causing problems , i suggest contacting your host , but other than that just filter them out and you wont ever see them , im sure its not slowing your server down much , its just annoying.

You know, the cute thing about a "Joe Job" is that you can't stop the deluge of bounces, they'll keep hitting that email address until the spam run is over and for days later.

The only way to stop it is to stop the mail server accepting any email for the affected address...

even if you route the mail to /dev/null the mail server still has to deal with the mail in the first place

Your host isnt going to shut you down just because a few gfyers make false complaints, they know it isnt being sent from your servers. But it might be a good idea to contact them and ask them to help , thats what they are there for

Nope as someone explained you can send them straight to your trash bin , but thats about it because they arent being sent from your server. Anyone can send an email from a faked address and if it bounces it goes back to the faked address, theres not really much to do to stop this.

Unless the spam is hurting you i wouldnt worry about it, the headers will show its not you sending them, and its a common spam technique.
