Having a pornographer as a friend - dangerous?

By our choice in occupation, pretty much all of us have given up the remotest possibility of any high-profile carreer in politics and such. No biggie, right?

But what about close friends and family? Could being friends with someone in the porn industry have a negative effect on future prospects of positions in politics and such?

I'm not talking about me. By age 16 I'd probably already ruined my chances of a career in politics. I'm talking about other people who have nothing to do with the industry themselves.

This question is a no brainer. If you had worded it as a topic of discussion instead of a question then the possibility of a new xbox or DVD player may have been strong for you.

This has the potential to be a very hot topic.

I'm not really interested in the xbox, just want some opinions on this matter.

You're leaving out "now", and since I don't really trust your psychic abilities, all we are left with is a "20 years ago - YES".

I spend thousands of dollars a month on Sleazy's psychic services. They are worth every penny.

Thanks for the compliment... I guess :glugglug

Personally, I think chances of it making a difference are very slight... but just big enough to scare the fuck out of me. Ofcourse, it wouldn't make much of a difference for most careers, but in some really high profile ones it has the potential for disaster.

Furious_Female 12-02-2003 02:28 AM

I think it would have a harder impact on local elections in small towns, where people are more likely to look down upon scandalous things. It also depends how open and honest someone is about what they have done or currently do. Like if someone is running for President and they swear their whole family and they themself are as pure as snow but something surfaces that shows their brother did gay midget porn flicks, it would probably ruin their chances.

If they were open about what their friends/family do or did from the beginning, it depends on how respected the person is. Some people are disliked so much, that people will hold anything against them, even if it's something their friend or family did. On the other hand, some people are so well liked, that people will accept anything and everything about them, no questions asked.

i.e. the people that adore Clinton and will overlook any wrong doing on his part but if Bush's brother's wife's cousin's sister's friend's great aunt's maid gets arrested for .00005 ounce of marijuana, Bush is then ridiculed for that.

It's a definite maybe, yes. And since the future is unknown, it's a risk.

Are you kidding? It has potential to be devastating for almost any mainstream career. I have seen people get passed up for promotions because of who they associate with at work.....Do you think being associated with a Pornographer would be a point for or against you?

Behind closed doors...They are all freaks. When public perception is brought into play then the game and rules change drastically.

Yes, but for most jobs, they don't do a background check on your friends outside of work. I personally trust my friends to be smart enough not to go around telling people at work that a friend of theirs makes extremely raunchy websites.

If I am not mistaken a porn star ran in the California governor election. And a pornographer, Larry Flynt, which actually recieved a good number of votes.

And, ofcourse, the California elections are a typical example of how politics work.

(aside from that, "a good number" means nothing. he had no chance in hell of actually *winning*, which is the only thing that really counts)

phogirl69 12-02-2003 02:46 AM

But if you are self employed, no one doing a background check would know that you are a webmaster if you are
just promoting sponsors/pushing affiliate programs right? How could anyone ever findd out, if you just work by yourself (don't own a big company) and keep a low profile?

Especially if you are not producing content, or being content, just sending traffic to programs? How would anyone ever know what you do/used to do?

Not if you don't tell anyone. If your friends and family don't know what you do, there is no one to tell on you.

com 12-02-2003 05:10 AM

fuck what anyone thinks about me... ive said it since day one. I will be beyond wealthy before I'm thirty regardless. And if someone or a social sect cannot accept a buisness minded person for whome she or he is then fuck them... they're probably related to whoever said "money does not bring happiness"

prostock 12-02-2003 08:32 AM

It can be a yes and a no , tho i do not feel you should or have to hide your life . I hear and see people saying dont tell any one and so on well that can sure be one hell of a long lie you have to live out !

But I have to say if people cant handle what I am doing them fuck them I dont really care , I only had one person ever give me shit over it and that was my exwife , the bitch told me it wasnt a real job , that sitting at home and working isnt a real job , go to a office every day and bla bla bla was a real job , so i went and got a office . needless to say that really pissed her off ! Come to think about maybe this is why she is a ex LOL wife :thumbsup :2 cents: :2 cents:

what he said...

also, I'd think another variable or two is

b) to what extent your involvement was/is

and

c) was your involvement in YOUR NAME or under the umbrella of a company name...

the part c) is all about how can they PROOVE your level of involvement or any 'direct' connections...

But it's not about you.
Sure, you can get rich and say "fuck you" to all who do not like it.
However, it's a different matter if your friends and family - who have not chosen to be in this biz - get screwed by it indirectly.

Me, I'd never work for a company that had a problem with my past. Hell, I don't even think I'll ever work for someone else, so that really isn't a problem.
But I'd feel extremely bad if the people I care about were hurt in any way because of their association with me.
