Laptop advice

I need a new laptop. Mainly will use it around house. Probably won't travel with it to much, so pretty basicis fine. Need the built in wireless lan deal. I prefer the eraser head mouse to the touch pad. Also want DVD player.

What do you guys recomend?????

The only ones I've seen with the eraser head mouse are ThinkPads.

I've got a Dell Latitude.. it's got inbuilt
wireless aswell as the touchpad and
eraser style mouse devices.

Dell has a few laptops with the eraser mouse pointer

IntenseCash 12-01-2003 04:58 PM

Dell is the only company that offers both eraser mouse and touchpad on their laptops. I love my dell, I have the Inspiron 4000. I recommend the extended warrenty no matter what you get. :winkwink:

I'm pretty happy with my Satellite. In fact, when we're not mobile it's our office server.

We've ordered a couple Dell's and their laptops rock. Not the lightest machines but definitely one of the best. I love their onsite warranties, anything goes wrong, next business day they're here with replacement parts and ready to go.

My main computer is a Dell, I just ordered another Dell for work, and this coming spring I'll probably splurge and go for the Dell laptop. When it comes to computers, I'm stuck on Dell. For electronics, it's Sony, though they do have a few laptops I've been eyeing...

dell has great audio components - for when you pop in a dvd.

they do run pretty hot...so you don't want to sit it on a nice wood table.

I like the look of the new toshibas with the wide screen and the harman karman audio... i have a toshiba. it's taken a beating and still works...but it's pretty shitty.

ibm thinkpads. are heavy duty. also take a beating...but if you're just around the house... that doesn't matter.

i prefer the eraser to the touchpad as well...even though...after prolonged use it does hurt the second knuckle joint.

i think pretty much all laptops have a model that has them.

btw - ian - you need to copy my sig - to ensure the party gets adequately promoted

Do you already own a laptop? Because if you own one and use it as a desktop replacement then you would be asking for a real mouse and not a stick pointing device. I have owned both the touch pad and the stick and both sucked when trying to do anything more than answer email. If you are going to be using it to do something useful like making money, then I'd suggest a Targus optical mouse, preferably wireless with bluetooth. Don't get a full sized mouse or you will just piss yourself off with how much space is required to go from one edge of the screen to the other.

IKE 12-01-2003 10:57 PM

Yea I will use a regular mouse most of the time but eventually I will lose it or destroy it. I am gonna get a Dell for sure now.

dell used to own, latitudes are my favourite laptops of all time still.. but dell has SERIOUSLY slippd in recent years both in quality and service. google search for 'dell hell'. i have a inspiron now, it's nothing special compared to anything else there. if it was my own money, seeing as how dell quality has degraded so substantially, i'd buy something from somewhere that you can take it back.

xroach 12-01-2003 11:01 PM

thinkpads are great and and always have been .. every toshiba satellite i've seen has just died eventually
