How often to you shut down your system?

After reading Odie's thread: what's the first thing you do when you wake up, more than a few said, "turn on my computer".

There are two schools of thought about this. I was tough that if you have a back up blower there is no need, and should not do a daily shut down. I only do it 3 times a week to clean up.
How about you?

SubSonic 11-29-2003 05:32 AM

hmmm .... last shutdown .... whats a shutdown? :winkwink:

i am using 2 windows xp machines and they are running for 4 weeks or more now ... without a shutdown. :thumbsup

Gruntled 11-29-2003 05:33 AM

I only do sheduled shutdowns on my laptops: I run Linux. :moon

Rorschach 11-29-2003 05:40 AM

I shut down all the boxes on my network that aren't... um .... doing stuff when I finish for the day, no point in leaving them on I reckon.

iwantchixx 11-29-2003 05:51 AM

I only ever shutdown when absolutely necesary like when doing hardware work on the system. It is extremely hard on power supplies and capacitors when you start a computer. If I need to get a fresh boot I just nail the reset button with my pinkie. It's a nice soft warm reboot. Most systems actualy intermittently kill the 12 volt to reset. This doesn't. Gotta love a properly configure bios :)

Special Eddie 11-29-2003 05:54 AM

I shutdown just before going to bed.

jimmyf 11-29-2003 06:39 AM

never, turn my monitors off, the boxes never

Same here. Restarting the machine is a waste of time IMHO. I save an extra 30 seconds, plus I have everything opened that I was working on previously!

When you have a bad short term memory like mine, you need to see what you were working on last, or you'l never work on it again!

Oh wait, were talking about Windows, right? Then every few days or so.

Yngwie 11-29-2003 07:16 AM

I never turn off my pc unless Im changing/adding harware.. other then that it only gets rebooted once in awhile. Only my monitor goes off when I go to bed

polish_aristocrat 11-29-2003 07:19 AM

It depends if you're in an office or are a single webmaster.
I have my PC almost next to my bed, so it's obvious that I shut it down every evening / night. :2 cents:

wyldblyss 11-29-2003 07:26 AM

I only shut down when I have to and it has nothing to do with what I think is best for the computer. I'm just lazy and I enjoy waking up and having all the programs I need open ready and waiting for me to do something.

magicmike 11-29-2003 07:30 AM

I leave mine on all the time, unless I'm going away for a few weeks.

It's rebooted when needed.

jimthefiend 11-29-2003 07:46 AM

ive got that extra special windows app that shuts the system down AUTO FUCKING MATICALLY once a day

Oracle Porn 11-29-2003 07:48 AM

Same here, I leave it on all day, then shut down at night.

Gemini 11-29-2003 08:06 AM

You guys need to reread your insurance policies and leases (if you have those too)... You might wake up to a fire and a nasty surprise. :glugglug

DeadFidel 11-29-2003 08:39 AM

I expected the above responces. I have an uncle who runs a large part of a major New York bank's central system (24-7-365), but swears that he shuts down his own home CPU -connected to the bank nightly to keep the mem/temp fresh.
Yet my older brother, a chemical engineer with a wicked ass system states what a lot of you have said, keep the sucker on unless you need to turn it off for maintenance.
I guess it depends on the size of the project and the trust held on individual equipment.
Too each his own.

loverboy 11-29-2003 08:42 AM

just on sunday, rest day for every one

Bree 11-29-2003 08:51 AM

I never shut down.. why?

tony286 11-29-2003 10:34 AM

I shut down everynight, something fails on one of the systems. Who wants to wake up to a burned up computer.

Sosa 11-29-2003 10:35 AM

every few days usually.

Spunky 11-29-2003 10:37 AM

I shutdown daily..If per chance a hack gets through ,my box is off..also its less wear and tear on my box.True the power supplies work a little harder but they are only 200 bucks anyways

theharvman 11-29-2003 10:54 AM

I shut down once a month.

Ic3m4nZ 11-29-2003 10:55 AM

I shut down each day.

directfiesta 11-29-2003 11:38 AM

It's ALWAYS off...

Smokey The Bear 11-29-2003 12:07 PM

I have started to do it once a week now, but the last year the poor box has been left on 24/7 barring power failure's.

MetaMan 11-29-2003 12:09 PM

my computer is on almost 3 weeks straight + at a time. the only time i restart is when it starts to lag a little bit. once i grab some more ram i wont need restarts for months :eatmouse

IntenseCash 11-29-2003 12:11 PM

usually dont completely shut down for at least a month. Just goes on auto standby.

Not good to do a complete shutdown... for all of you that do. Just be sure you are behind a firewall.

brand0n 11-29-2003 12:14 PM

Kicker 11-29-2003 03:20 PM
