Air Canada Service Staff Get Burger-Coupon Bonus
Wed November 26, 2003 08:17 AM ET

MONTREAL (Reuters) - Pleased with workers who scored top marks on customer service, Air Canada recently picked 100 at random to give them a bonus -- a $3.78 hamburger coupon that expires in five weeks.
Employees winning the award were sent a personal letter containing the coupon, redeemable until Dec. 31 at the Harvey's hamburger chain, Second Cup coffee shops or other restaurant outlet owned by Cara Operations Ltd., which provides food service for the insolvent airline.

Air Canada said the awards came at no cost to the carrier, mainly because the coupons will soon expire.

Earlier this month, Cara warned its own investors that Air Canada, the dominant airline in Canada and world No. 11, may cancel its catering contract.

Some Air Canada in-flight service employees were forced to forgo a bonus earlier this year when the airline won court protection from its creditors and squeezed some $840,000 of concessions from its unions.

The burger bonus comes as two groups bidding to control Montreal-based Air Canada through equity infusions have offered its chief executive and top restructuring manager multimillion-dollar stock or cash bonuses to remain with the airline through its bankruptcy protection proceedings.

now that's ghetto.

quiet 11-27-2003 12:12 AM

heh, i'm flying AC first class from Edmonton to Montreal tomorrow.

SleazyDream 11-27-2003 12:13 AM

do they need to give their employees any more - they fly for free - as much as they want - and their family - and any two friends they want to bring with them - and if they have a few years with the company it's always first class.

Air Canada is possibly the most over-priced airlines I've ever flown on.

i flew first class return to LA - $1600 canadian - north west air. when I checked air canada was more than double.

ask some of the people in first on AIR Canada- every time I do with air canada they are gov't employees flying for free or air canada employees - like 60% or more of them....

it's ALWAYS made me feel sick - I have no problem with employees and gov't workers getting free flights - but BACK OF THE FUCKING BUS DAMN IT - I have the fucking cash.

i agree with you on that one Sleazy

a young, sexy, humorous, vibrant crew that i will gladly fly anywhere with in Canada - the only airline left in Canada that is not gouging their customers with outrageous prices

the only other airline that i've ever liked here was WardAir

just got caught up with various shit. with the heritage hockey classic coming up, i decided to wait till that was done. at that point it was time to do business banking. parked my cars yesterday.

no real difference regardless, since i'm back and forth between East and West each month anyway...

quiet 11-27-2003 01:07 AM

and yes, i love west jet. by far the best enconomy class airline in Canada.

Validus 11-27-2003 01:11 AM

Well, Air Canada has been going through a couple of tough years. I think this "coupon" is meant more to be symbolic. Well, best of luck to Air Canada, go Canada!

sexxxsites 11-27-2003 02:21 AM

fly tango ?
or should I drive ?

Muff 11-27-2003 03:03 AM

Air Transit is good aswell. It's $100 more for first class and the seating and service is the same if not better than Air Canada.

KCat 11-27-2003 04:07 AM

Have you tried Jetsgo? Every Sunday at midnight they do loonie specials. The taxes & fees are still about $200, but a great deal from Edmonton to TO.

first class is full of politicians, govt managers and airline employees. plus they travel on an AD50 or an AD75 rate, which is up to 75% off regular rate, with no early booking. The employees are free.

is there any realistic way of getting yourself hooked up with those kind of rate cuts? thanks...

An AD75/50 is available to"special" contractors and customers, govt etc.

For example, Canada Post is Air Canadas biggest customer as the planes are full of mail and freight. Therefore Canada Post would qualify for huge rate cut for managers flying on business.

you know, you should ask a travel agent about an AD discount, i know the travel agents get it too.

sherie 11-27-2003 09:20 AM

Oh my! What a freaking joke!! They are my number one airline. One reason is the room and the other is that they do have some of the better meals. Although, their customer service sucks ass somewhat. On my way to LA a flight attendant woke me from a deep sleep to tell me to put my seat belt on. Well I guess I shook my head, trying to gather myself and she started yelling at me....I could not believe it....Sandy was a complete bitch!! If that is how they reward their employee's I can see why they are so bitter....Next time I am going to bring free McD's hamburgers to the whole crew LOL

NOTR 11-27-2003 09:31 AM

Not all level employees fly for free.

My girlfriends dad was General Manager of Air canada and left about 4 years ago when they started going to shit. He was allowed trips anywhere, occasionally outsourced jet when he needed to get somewhere fast. Always first class.

A few weeks ago he was fighting for his pension, which would have been destroyed if it weren't for the employees reaction to air canada's decision.

Like he said, they started going downhill 4 years ago and it's not changing anytime soon. Understaffed, underpaid. You get what you paid for when you fly with them.

Wow some one remembers Ward Air:thumbsup I used to love flying with them ! I Absolutely HATE FUCKING AIR CANADA:321GFY against my better judgement I let the travel agent talk me into it for the LA trip. I relented because it was a direct flight. Coming back it took an hour and 53 minutes to get tru the check in.Huge line up out the door @ LAX. Total chaos, only 3 agents open, the rest of the computers down. They put all the smaller airlines out of business by predatory pricing, so they can offer shit service and suck on the taxpayers blood to keep going:321GFY

radical 11-27-2003 11:24 AM

Try easy jet hehehehehe!! :glugglug

GTS Mark 11-27-2003 11:29 AM

I fucking HATE Air Canada. I was so pissed last week when I booked my flight down to LA from Vancouver. It was through Delta which was fine, but when I got to the airport I found out it was sourced through Air Canada. Which means you get an air canada plane and staff! ARRRRRRGH!!!

Fucking useless retards! I will pay up to $200 more to avoid Air Canada flights, that is how much I detest their airline.

DH

P.S. West Jet is great and JFK I do remember Wardair :thumbsup

Odie 11-27-2003 11:38 AM

yeah, AC is a bitch..they are always more expensive to fly with..

my friend used to work for them and I used to get free flights but they changed their policy..now u have to fly WITH the employee that u are getting the free flight from and they've limited the flights as well...:321GFY AC!

actually air anada is overstaffed and over paid (compared to other airlines, and aircanada ADMITS that)- they just don't have a fucking CLUE how to run a company
