Anyone with information regarding what happened to this dog is asked to call the Washington County Sheriff's Department or Crime Stoppers at 836-TIPS. Investigator Billy Ruemke of the Washington County Sheriff's Office said the dog had been tied with electrical cords to two cinder blocks and thrown off a bridge in an apparent attempt to drown it.

A dog rescued Saturday doesn't seem like the victim of a despicable act of cruelty that left even sheriff's deputies shaken.

The adult male, mixed-breed dog -- found sitting on a rock in the middle of New Years Eve Creek at the FM 2447 bridge -- "is a real well-behaved and well-mannered dog ... he'll lick you to death," said Investigator Billy Ruemke of the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Ruemke said the dog had been tied with electrical cords to two cinder blocks and thrown off the bridge in an apparent attempt to drown it.

It somehow managed to scramble onto a rock in the creek that was just within reach.

"That rock was just about as far as that cord would reach," said Ruemke.

Ruemke speculated that the dog sat on the rock for some time before finally being seen.

"It looked like it had probably been there for a couple of days," he said.

Ruemke responded to the call, received about 5:15 p.m. Saturday. The Chappell Hill Fire Department had to be called to help in the rescue because the dog was about seven or eight feet from the bank.

The department used hooks on poles, normally used to pull down walls and ceilings, to snag the dog's collar and the cords.

The dog and blocks were then dragged to the bank. The dog is now in the care of the Donald G. Austin Memorial Animal Shelter.

Ruemke said anyone with information about the dog is asked to call the sheriff's department. If they want to withhold their identity, they may call Crime Stoppers at 836-TIPS.

Family Rescues Dog Left To Die

HOUSTON -- A mother and daughter rescued a dog they found Monday that was left to die in a plastic bag.

The family said the schnauzer was found with its eyes, mouth, nose and legs covered with tape and tied up inside a garbage bag.

The mother said she took the tape off the dog's body so it could breathe and rushed it to a veterinary clinic.

Doctors told the family it was a miracle the dog survived.

"Thank goodness another dog ripped the bag open, at least so it could get some air. But, if the dog probably would not have ripped the bag open, I'm sure it would have been dead by in the morning," rescuer Blake Meischen said.

The dog went home with the family.

Police are trying to determine why the dog was taped up and left in the tied-up bag.
