TopBucks asks - what type of party would you most like to attend?

As a frequent backer of parties at the various trade shows, we're wondering what type of party appeals the most to webmasters. I may have missed some possibilities on my poll list - please post any other options you can think of.

A couple of quick explanatory notes:
By "hospitality suite party", I mean more laid back affairs; basically just an open bar and some space to hang out and network, without the party itself being so loud that you have to yell just to hear each other.
By "Game/Activity Based" I mean something like the Gameworks party, or the webmaster racing that has been done in the past - something along those lines.

Anyway, let me hear your thoughts, party people.

Be smart, save your $ on parties. This biz is on shaky legs. Save the $, and take your top clients out for a nice private dinner where business will actually be done. You guys already have a name for yourselves, not much to accomplish by blowing $100k on a party.

True... I do think you can have parties, but they can be in invitation only party. Intive the people you want or currently do business with. Have fun, drink up, but make sure you are reaping some of the rewards for sponsoring a party.. not just passing out drinkss and showing off t&a for every joe shmo.

A valid point, to be sure, and one that appears to be in the minds of a lot of companies this time around. If you look at the Internext party page for the upcoming show, there are a lot fewer parties going on than in previous years, although I'm sure there are some that simply have yet to be announced/listed.

Best parties are the ones where you can actually be comfortable and actually talk to people and network.

stuffy rooms and loud music is not the environment I like

EffexAdam 11-24-2003 02:22 PM

Hospitality suite is always the best bet

A party in a club is great, as long as the music is turned down and it's closed to the public. Suite parties usually get too crowded and smokey (not to mention the amount of damage usually done by the end of the night), and the dinner parties I've attented seem to confine you to networking with the people at your table or sitting near you at the table. You don't get much of a chance to mingle.

There should be a happy medium between the two extremes. If you make it too exclusive you are cutting out the life blood of the business, Newbies. All large programs need volume of Wms to promote the product. You cant completely rely on the top guys with the gigantic trafic sources, what if they leave? :2 cents:

Yah, in terms of my personal preference, I'd have to agree with you there. I thought the poker tourney that you put on with Loverscash in FL was a hoot, too. Not sure how much biz got done, but it sure seemed like everyone had a fine time.

The lifeblood of a PPS programs biz is their top clients. I would speculate that less than 100 webmasters make up 90% of the daily joins to a big program. So why throw a party for 1000? Take care of those making you $, not the children or non businessmen.

Odie 11-24-2003 02:38 PM

hospitality parties are great and dinner parties are great as well..

no strip club parties, gets a lil tiring...
the networking possibilities are endless...only problem is remembering who is who on the cards when u get home...which is why I write descriptions of people on the back of the cards..:)

Yeah parties where you can acutally have conversations are a must.

Its pretty pointless if you have to shout in the persons ear who's standing right beside you.

At the same time I've noticed a bit of a cycle in the last few shows. Lots of parties, then no parties, then lots of parties.

I'm guessing the value of a big party is a lot greater if you're the only one throwing one during the show. Also the bigger parties are nice because there are a lot more people there and you (if your trying) can talk to a bigger group of people during the night.

For the small parties, you can talk longer with each person and possibly get more business done.

One of these days we'll get you spinning for us, KRosh. :winkwink:

You're right - it has been far too long since I heard one of your lame ass, tired old jokes....

I kid, of course. We'll have to grab a drink (or 6) together at the January show.

I see nothing wrong with taking care of those making you $, its just good business practice. On the other hand you also have to cultivate new sources. You will see parties for the 1000 wms dissapearing, in favour of the smaller more intimate gatherings. The No credit card .com Cigar and Scotch party in FLA was a good example of what can be done with a smaller budget. I still feel you have to have a semi open policy, one of those little fish you let into your next gathering, could be your next whale.......

I don'T understand why so many of you likes strip clubs :(

HighRoller 11-24-2003 03:19 PM

I have to agree that you could just go to a strip club anyday, so no need for it to be that. I have been to all of your parties and enjoyed them all. I actually really liked your last one in Florida for 2 main reasons:

1. it was coolder in there, where as the hotel rooms get very very hot, and you could just step outside easier on the Florida party.

2. Also there was a lot of variety you could do many different things.

This is going to sound stupid, but either get an extremely large room like in Florida and chop it up so that one is a noisy dance type of open floor, another room or two is photo shoots, and then maybe another room is for mingling and networking less noisy. I think you kind of have this idea set up with the hotel room, just that that is too small and hot in there, so if you maybe have 3 separate rooms even that would work.

Either way I know it will good as usual :thumbsup

I would rather have 100 small to mid sized webmasters sending me 1 Signup a day than 10 "Big Fish" sending me 10 signups a day.

wickedpictures_com 11-24-2003 03:29 PM

Have a party at Cheetahs :)

Wade 11-24-2003 03:32 PM

I prefer the smaller parties, they tend to be a lot more productive. The ones at strip clubs are just too loud, you cant do any business there.

As usual though, its what you make of the party, the host can only do so much.

Quentin 11-24-2003 04:56 PM
