I had a small contest and the winner would get my sig space for 2 weeks.

He forgot about it so i made a post that he had to claim my sig soon.

Sleazy picked that up wrong and posted something about being amazed that i sold my sig.
Someone picked that up and thats where the first offers started.

If you look at that sleazydream post you will see thats where the first money publicly was offered. Ofcourse sig selling is as old as the net, but the whole gfy hype started in that thread.

I dont sig whore, but my signature is used worldwide on thousands of messages boards. Just yesterday it did more than 2,250,000 impressions.

In fact, the damn thing has become so popular I've had to curb the "custom" signatures people made on my server (over 33,000 of them)!

I wanna be paid for my sigspot too :(

It's a PHP script using referrer information. This "trick" is just formatting that text in a nice little graphic and then using an htaccess to rewrite the JPS file to execute the sciript.

I let people create their own custom versions (with their own random quotes); but when i though a few hundred people would do it I ended up with 30,000+ custom signatures in less than a month. The bandwidth for the signature alone is over 12GB a day!

Ya, I could probably figure it out eventually, given time, which I don't have.

I think it's easier to just pay the nineteen bucks.

Are all of the hosted custom options that are available still available with the source code purchase?

how does the text get into a jpg on the fly? and that graphic says it's a jpg but it has 'transparency' - i'm SOOOOOOOOO CONFUSED!

It's not really hard to understand the concept, it's really a good idea actually, and I bet it sells well for the novelty it is.

Bandwidth, the hosted sig is $16.00 for 6 months. It would be pretty hard to burn that much transfer for each single sig. He's doing OK on the profit margin :winkwink:

Well, you can certainly modify the code to provide all those options. In the custom sig deal I just have alot of flags to determine if it should be included.

I do have to pay for all the bandwidth since its on my servers (which is why its hard to offer it as a "free" service).

I actually wrote it at the beginning of the year just for myself. It was only when I noticed my bandwidth usage going through the roof that I figured out so many peoplew ere using it! lol
