No one really takes them very seriously...

There are many reasons people join the Republican party. Many are strict fiscal conservatives and free market advocates who are staunchly liberal in their social values. Remember, it was the Republicans that helped Lyndon Johnson get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 signed. I do agree with the subtext of your post re religious conservatives...these tend to choke out the more libertarian wing of the GOP.

There are "Uncle Toms" in every part of our society.

yeah, I used to deal with the Boston branch fairly often when I was at university in Boston because I did PR for the campus gay/straight alliance.

Doesn't really mean anything other than that there is a small group of people that don't fit the usual mold.
