Uk Webmasters: Does the UK has faith in SMS billing?

Hi guys,

I wanna hear the opinions of UK adultwebmasters (and none - UK also welcome :) )
Do you believe that SMS billing is going to take off? On the European mainland it is already very popular but in the UK we haven' had much succes so far (off course we are just starting up)
So let me know your opinion!

Greetz,

Pieter

Its a great idea, but hard to restrict the age limits. I mean you dont have to be 18 to buy a voucher phone with sms. With credit card the customer has to be 18.

if theres some sort of age verification it would be great as your not going to have to worry about charge packs.

There are a HUGE number of SMS users in the UK but unfortunately about 80% are under the age of 15. :2 cents:

Although on the upside you may end up with Michael Jackson as a member.

Our system is going to verify if the mobile user is a contract or pay-as-you-go customer. This will give us a crude age verification but it is better than nothing.

Facts have also showed that the majority of people on pay-as-you-go have less than £2.50 credit on at any one time. Which makes subscriptions or a high one off payment almost impossible to bill for. That is why a contract user is a better customer to have as the money is available from the outset.

{fusion} wrongly suggested that there are charge backs, there is no such thing with sms billing, this is why we as a company have to follow the UK and EC legislation when starting to operate in this market. You will not find as many cowboys within this arena due to this fact.

Texting in the UK is big business, I know I send about 10 - 15 sms messages per day on average. Sometimes I can send up to 50 if I am planning a night out and friends are at work and I cannot fone them. I'm not too sure how it could work tho with porn. I know in some countries it works really well but not to sure if the UK will be as good!

i've nothing but good things to say about SMS/Text billing. In Belgium and the Netherlands it converts like crazy :Graucho

Sending SMS messages and being billed by Premium SMS are two completely different things. Just because people love to chat through SMS it doesn't mean they love SMS billing. Plus if you cut off all prepaid users, you cut off a HUGE majority of cellphone users.

Any idea what percentage of users are on subscription in the UK ?

senseidru 11-19-2003 10:42 AM

Everyone I know has a payasyougo mobile, so it wouldn't be smart to cut that large % of peeps out. I think SMS billing is really going to take off here soon.

The percentages are 75% pre-paid 25% post-paid. However with 3G and the massive push for new generation phones, it seems to be tipping back to contract users being the main market to push for.

We have put a conciderable amount of resources into researching the facts and figures.

I say the UK is set to be a big earner for PSMS.

I don't know how it is in the UK and the US, but you can't bill via SMS on a "prepaid" phone service in Australia, and the only way to obtain a full contract phone, is if you're over the age of 18.
