What is the average length/size of a movie clip
 

for a movie gallery for MGP posting? 10 seconds? What? Thanks in advance for any help.

what about file sizes? Im lucky to get 1mb per 10 seconds. any good tricks to share for getting them down smaller?

I would do 12 seconds or more depending on the quality of movies that you want to show and the BW you have available. Personally, for MGP's that require 1 MB or greater movies I usually do 30 sec clips.

The most TIME ever shared in a gallery should be about 1 minute.

File Length

8 thumbs = 7 seconds each
4 thumbs = 15 seconds each
3 thumbs = 20 seconds each

File Sizes

600 to 800k = 7 seconds each
1.5 to 2mb = 15 seconds each
2mb to 2.5mb = 20 seconds each

If you are talking about the mpeg format:
You should go here http://www.pegasys-inc.com/e_main.html and buy a copy of TMPGEnc Plus 2.5. You'll need to play around with the encoding parameters but I think you'll be satisfied with the results. Here are some samples,

Depending on the quality of the clip that you want to show you can get even smaller file sizes.

If you want even smaller file sizes, you can use the WMV format. I don't have any samples because I don't use that format for galleries. You can get the Windows Media Encoder for free at the MS site.

i would say about 1mb standard most places will accept your movies with that as long as their not too nasty in quality about 12- 15 seconds

Tmpgenc is also free and the paid version allows yout to work with mpg2, which is pretty much useless so dont buy it.
want smaller clips?
Fiddle with the bitrates in tmpgenc and the audio quality for smaller file sizes.
Last tip, never make any clips below 8 seconds you will get rejected everywhere

I downloaded TMPwhatever and I can't make hide nor hair of it.. How the fuck are you supposed to make the video clips? I got as far as that, and the damn thing hangs on me. What am I doing wrong?

To convert size, bitrate and audio, try http://www.eo-video.com/

Then when you've shrunk the clip to your liking, put it into Video studio to edit and chop the clip down.

Videostudio has a 30 day full trial, and I find it newbie friendly.

You should be able to adjust the frames to get a 20 second clip down to an average of 1.1 1.7mb Hope that helps.
