Plane coming into Van Nuys airport w/no brakes

I was just @ Starbucks and the police there said that there was a plane coming into the Van Nuys Airport with no brakes. Anyone else hear anything about this? What would they do @ a time like this?

Turboface 11-14-2003 08:20 PM

Don't they have air brakes? They worked for Bugs Bunny.

freeadultcontent 11-14-2003 08:21 PM

demand another drink if on the plane.

Otherwise whip out the camcorder.

Dont they have things to stop planes at the end of the runways, at commercial airports? Im assuming they'll put the flaps down (or do they put them up?), reverse thrust, and try to impact it as gently (I use that term loosely) as possible.

Looks Like i picked the wrong week to quit smoking.....

How about some coffee Johnny.........

This reminds me of the raid over Macho Grande

dodger21 11-14-2003 08:27 PM

No shit? Nothing on the new. VN airport is a mile away.

Peter Romero 11-14-2003 08:29 PM

Compadres... I'm fuckin serious! Anyone got a police blotter?

Peter Romero 11-14-2003 08:32 PM

I'm in the Van Nuys Airport flight patern (always fucking up my video) and I hear & see a bunch of police helicopters.

I am sure they will just direct them to the longest runway and reduce air speed as much as possible when they land. Then they will kick the engines in reverse.

I'm no pilot but I have flown alot :winkwink:

still waiting to hear the news... everyone thinks I'm bullshitting. Wait till they watch the news. Hopefully it's safe, but we will hear about it trust me.

AaronM 11-14-2003 08:46 PM

Remember in one of the Airplane movies when they crashed through the windows at the airport?

Oh yeah! :glugglug

That figures... since most of the cars in Van Nuys are jacked on hollow blocks with no brakes...no tires... no engines.:1orglaugh

Van Nuys... not exactly the Brentwood of the SF Valley.:2 cents:

"Well... I can make a plane, a hat... there's a sale at Pennys!!!"

Mr. Jim 11-14-2003 09:07 PM

....a broach

Chichio 11-14-2003 09:09 PM

looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue! :thumbsup

they can reverse the engines and make the plane come to a complete stop, just wastes more fuel.

Chichio 11-14-2003 09:11 PM

damn, too late:)

xxxoutsourcing 11-14-2003 09:11 PM

It happens all the time anyways, far more than you hear about.
Airline pilots do simulation tests for all sorts of failures, so it's no biggie.....
You can't beat flying a simulator :Graucho

good job, now if we can just get you to somehow talk to the pilots of that plan, you just might be able to talk them down!

EZRhino 11-15-2003 12:00 AM

LOL, I love that movie!

detoxed 11-15-2003 12:30 AM

I still havent heard about a plane landing with no brakes, i guess its not really a big deal.

WiredGuy 11-15-2003 12:30 AM

I think they have some kind of foam they use on the runway which slows down the plane. I think if they land as soon as they hit the runway and just cut all engines and flaps and use the foam, they can make it. Those runways are really long...

The foam is a fire retardant thats used for planes when thier landing gear wont come down

Van Nuys has one runway thats 8000 feet long and 150 wide, so just about any jet with thrust reversers (not all have them) should be able to set down safely. Its not a commercial airport anyway so its unlikely to be a passenger jet.

I assume if the jet (if it is a jet) doesnt have thrust reversers they will redirect it to burbank or long beach which has longer runways and better equipped emergency crews. A propeller driven plane wont have any problems slowing down on that runway even without brakes, it like a mile and a half long.

If anyone has a scanner, Van Nuys tower frequency is 122.95

You seem to know a little too much about these aircraft and radio frequencies than I feel comfortable with! I'm sure some Al Queda people would buy this info from you :)
