Internet Experience Test: Remember Gopher?

A friend and I were talking about our first experiences with the internet and were laughing about how excited we were cruising around through Gopher.

At the time, it only tapped into participating universities, but you could still find some interesting things tucked into the far corners of the net through Gopher.

Of course, when Mosaic came out, we just about bust a nut. That's when I first decided to learn more about this internet stuff. I think this was in 1996.

Do you remember your first Net experience?

I've been on the Internet since 1989.

Archie, Veronica, Gopher, FTP, WAIS, Usenet, Telnet, talk, etc...all good stuff....

I hate to say it but my interent experience is AOLv2.0 I think. I feel like such a whore now. All dirty .... I need to take a shower to remove this AOL smell off of me.
:throwup

I remember the first days of AOL... they had no idea how to track those free hour promotions. I went an entire year just by changing the name on my account but by using the same credit card for verification. Got all the porn I needed as a college kid in those chatrooms!!!

Of course I remember 'Gopher'. It used to be my nickname until I got tired of fighting off all the imposter gophers.

ZoiNk 11-14-2003 02:27 PM

Yea, I used to regularly use gopher when I started. There weren't many web pages in comparison to gopher pages. Normially started at gopher.tamu.edu That was an awesome portal to start with :)

Now that I think of it, I can remember getting a top of the line 2400 baud modem. The thing that made it top of the line was that it used some new compression thingie. I think I could get speeds as high as 3600 baud on a good day.

None of that really mattered when using a text based system though!

Flashback to 1995. Gopher and Archie and yes.... Lynx (a purely text based web browser) (wiping off sentimental tears)

You guys ready for this?:

September 1990, green and black terminal access to university unix system for my first email account. Quickly followed by the "talk" command (split screen real time IM) and ftp, then shortly after that was gopher, archie, MUDding, lynx, and eventually the beta of mosaic.

I remember spending like an hour sitting with 2 friends in the computer lab sending "Fuck you" emails to one another from across the room.

Good times... :)

I guess fightthispatent has me beat, though I was "phreaking" phone codes on 300 baud modems to get long distance access to the best software/game/ascii porn sights back around '85 or so.
