Cybersex blamed for half of divorces

There's further evidence that cybersex is increasingly being blamed for the break-up of marriages.

According to online divorce service divorce-online, half of all divorce petitions it processed are due to Internet adultery and cybersex behaviour.

Of the 500 divorce petitions surveyed, half contained allegations concerning cybersex, inappropriate online relationships and pornography.

The findings appear to support earlier studies into the Net and marriage break-up.

Last year, two-thirds of lawyers meeting at an annual conference in Chicago reported that the Internet had played a significant role in divorces they had handled during the past year.

Meeting a new lover online and an "obsessive" interest in pornography were the top two problems cited in many Internet-related divorce cases, they said. Other reasons that have led to the break down of marriages include excessive use of the Net and chat rooms.

At the time, J Lindsey Short, Jr., president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, had this to say: "While I don't think you can say that the Internet is causing more divorces, it does make it easier to engage in the sorts of behaviours that traditionally lead to divorce."

The internet may have set the initial motions for divorce, but it's certainly not the cause. Certain people in certain situations are simply drawn to certain areas of it.

How many married men have met women through phone personals? How many married men pick up porn mags?

If porn is breaking up couples, then the marrage isn't very strong to begin with. And if married men are meeting women online, then by that point the marrage is obviously already damaged.

How many divorces are the result of corporate America? Probably 25x more than anything internet related.

cluck 11-13-2003 07:10 PM

Cybersex is good news for women. All you gotta do is get a keylogger and you're ready to cement your divorce and start raking in the paychecks.

Marriage is a sham anyways, good riddens.

I think women are just pissed in general, they used to be able to hold the poontang over us like a carrot in front of a donkey, now if you don't put out, we can just jump on the net & bust a nut to a different girl every night, or 100 different girls, then login to localgspot.com & find a couple married women without attitudes to hit :thumbsup

Whoops... just let the guys wank or the women "thwack their gadget" (I love that saying- thansk cj).. it's better than him/her banging another babe/dude

Weak marriages and selfish people are the leading causes of divorce. Cybersex and porn are symptoms at best.

That is the biggest bunch of crap I have ever heard...

So that would mean that before the days of chat rooms, there was 25% less divorce??

Bullshit!

This is the same nonsense as all of the other excuses used for the lack of ability to maintain a marital relationship..

Cybersex.. affairs.. the bar.. too many hours at the office..

It's all the same bull..

If things were ok at home, there'd be no need for these activities..

There's always an outside reason why marriages fail with these, "researchers".. It's not the external activities that ruin marriages.. it's the internal issues that bring on the external activities.. Fix the internal issues and the external activities become nonexistent.

Thats exactly what I was thinking! I believe more couples in troubling relationships need to get help before they take the easy road of getting a divorce. Its Bullshit

gothweb 11-13-2003 07:49 PM

If you think about it, all the article talks about is blame, not cause and effect. So, sure, I can believe that half of divorces are "blamed" on cybersex or porn. People will do anything not to take the blame themselves.

yeah you can't place blame on an inatimate object like the net. if it wasn't the net it would of been somethinge else to break up the marriage/relationship. if women aren't happy they are going to search for some kind of outlet.
