Unfortunately, yes. It was a political loss, not a military one.

I've got some Vietnamese friends who would dispute that :Graucho

But having being there myself recently, just surviving the climate / culture shock / smell / disease is an achievement in itself - let alone fighting a war there

You're saying that it was a political victory? The US was winning the war in absolute terms. It just lost the political will after the Tet Offensive of 1968...hence it was a political loss NOT a military one.

Vietnam lost over a million people and really was on the ropes until the US decided to scale down and phase out.

I'm not saying nothing, just quoting some friends of mine.

But yeah I hear you, the US could have kept going

Though if they did stay, keeping a peace would be as much of a challange as it is in Iraq I'd guess :2 cents:

When you say "Vietnam lost over a million people..." I think you must be referring to North Vietnam...because the over all Vietnamese loss...I believe...was more than three million. You are correct about it being a "political" loss...it was not a military defeat.

Yep, North Vietnam.

In response to the best Army...that is relative...but the US is currently the only Nation on the Earth that can project its military power...in force...to any AO on the Earth...so in that sense it is the best.

Interesting point you raise :)

There was a good article in TIME magazine a year ago about the army of the Vatican - saying that to join, you have to speak a few languages & have all these other traits / attributes, and the pay is non existant - and they've got a shortage of applicants at the moment :1orglaugh

<IMX> 11-13-2003 06:56 AM

I would have to agree with Serge. Been reading "The prince" recently?

;)))

I think Serge is the "Porn Prince"

buhahaha when you sending me your book?

You have to rule out the U.S.S.R.

It doesn't exist.

Im not sure about that, Serge. The Papacy lost the Papal states of Central Italy to Garibaldi's Red Shirts. Indeed, it wasn't until Mussolini became Il Ducce of Italy that there was a rapproachment between the Vatican and the rest of newly unified Italy.

correct...I hate those educated Russians, they are the only ones who can beat me in historical facts
;-)))

rooster 11-13-2003 07:26 AM

it took all the other most powerful countries to beat the Nazis. They are the best.

Also, iraq is hardly a military loss. They gained control of the most poweful arab country in a month. And cut your vaunted republican national guard to pieces. Sure the nusiance attacks by the gorillas are a pain, but they are hardly a big organized fighting force.

DarkJedi 11-13-2003 07:27 AM

Canada has the best army in the world

Cash 11-13-2003 07:29 AM

I would have voted for Saddam's Iraqi army, but it's not in this poll. :winkwink:

Who said it was a loss... US beat Iraq "by a knockout" see first post.

mr rick 11-13-2003 07:43 AM

USA had the best toys and trained troops in the world. Having the technology and troops that can use it is key. The Russians had some good shit that turned into rust buckets.

Israel got some balls though. Read up on the 6-day war. Surrounded and outnumbered they launched a surprise air attack and fucked everyone up.

Canadians lost a lot of soldiers during WWII. hence, the (official Canadian holiday) Day of Remembrance for all those brave Canadians soldiers.
