Redundant providers regarding hosting

Ok someone explain this to me.

When someone says we have mutiples providers ie: UUnet. Verio, level 3 and so on...... If one goes to shit wouldnt your routers or whatevr reroute to the other providers ....hence true redundacy???

Explain please

Good providers use BGP4 routing, and it's not as simple as what you are suggesting, but has the same effect. With BGP4, all providers are used simultaniously based on their routing metrics.

Depends how the network is setup. If its truly multi-homed then all of the routes are always active. So if the best route for you is through Level3 the Level3 link is used, or the verio if thats better. So all of them have traffic running through. If one of them goes down, depending on the config, the other three or however many the hosting company has should just push more of the load. It should be transparent.
