twistyneck 11-12-2003 10:12 PM

They are super easy to take care of but you'd better like noise all day long.

They are great. Got one when I was watching old Berretta reruns.

Amputate Your Head 11-12-2003 10:14 PM

and hell yes they make to damn much noise , that was why i would talk to her , asking her DAMN cant you get them to shut the fuck up !

mule 11-12-2003 10:18 PM

I had one as well, and as everyone says, it's very easy. But the fuckers do tend to make a racket. Mine used to start screeching like a banshee every time the phone rang.

Ah, yep, those aren't as noisy, and easier to train to swear. You can teach it to yell "GFY" all day long :)

Spunky 11-12-2003 10:25 PM

Differant story...Great birds...will out live their owners. They can be tame but its best to get them young. They also cost a couple k.

Tala 11-12-2003 10:26 PM

Dude, those things are screeching loud bastards that never shut the fuck up. I was hearing the one that my mother had for hours AFTER I left her house!

Cockatoos, though, are quieter. Go for those.

Ours screams ALL FUCKING DAY. :2 cents:

makefuckingmoney 11-12-2003 10:31 PM

Birds SUCK..

Dog much better..

A nice English Bulldog..now thats a cool dog!

Spunky 11-12-2003 10:33 PM

They also need massive attention..if they are left alone too long they go loopy..Start pulling out their feathers and shit.

makefuckingmoney 11-12-2003 10:34 PM

Best day I had with my bird was when I came home and it was stiff on the bottom of the cage!

Awwwwwwwwww.. the silence!

PersianKitty 11-12-2003 10:52 PM

I have a Timneh African Grey.. smaller, not as noisy and very intelligent.

There are two cockatoos at the bird store where I go. We were there today. There is one there right now that is the most wacko, silly, loving, cuddly thing I've ever seen. Because of some strange circumstances in her owner's life , she's ended up pretty much living at the bird shop (very sad and selfish of the owner I think). She's going through her terrible twos, but she's very sweet for the most part. She was out when I got there today. As I walked by, she pipes up "Go Bye Bye!" and put one foot out. She went from my hand to my chest (literally snuggled up sitting on my boobs with her head under my neck) then make the loudest smooching sound I've ever heard. Couldn't help but love it. She will also bounce up and down until you moving your hand up and down with her own it.. then all of the sudden she'll swing herself backwards and upside down. If she's out on a stand or has her cage door open and you won't come to her, she'll come to you.. walking on the floor like a penguin.

Anywhooo.. long story but.. a cockatoo's personality is very dependent on the time spent with its owner and the patience. To get the type of fun personality that this bird has, meant alot of hours dedicated to the bird.

They can be very demanding of your attention and will be very vocal if ignored. They are one of the louder of the larger 'pet' birds.

I'd suggest you do as much reading up on them as possible. If you've never owned a bird larger than a parakeet, you might even consider several visits to where-ever you are looking at purchasing. When you do purchase, do so from an aviary or bird store, not from a pet store that just happens to sell birds along with everything else.

PK is right. They can be a handfull. Fun but ignore them and forget about it they will make your life hell. They can also learn bad habits like a kid or dog. If screaming as loud as they can gets your attention (and they scream loud) they will do it every time they feel they want it (which is often).

I have a Macaw and a grey. The Macaw can be a pain in the ass as it is. I couldnt imagine dealing with a Cockatoo. Think twice before getting one.. err maybe think three times and read a bunch of books if you like your sanity :)

African Greys are kick ass birds, and VERY intelligent. But you have to spend a great deal of time with birds or they do get depressed and so forth.:(
