Raising a family in Southern California?

I've been considering relocating from snowy Detroit to coastal San Diego county for some time now. I know many of you live in that area, so I'm wondering what your thoughts are about raising a family in that kind of environment. I know the schools are good, but what are the kids like?

It's a big jump from conservative Michigan to Liberal California, so I want to make sure I'm making the best move for my family.

Better weather.

Insane housing prices, specially in south and coastal Orange county, coastal los angeles county, and SB.

California is not uniformly liberal. You have liberal pockets like SF and LA but you also have conservative Orange County, The Central Valley, SB, and North San Diego county.

Even Orange County and San Diego are extremely liberal compared to many parts of the U.S.

The California idea of "conservative" is Arnold, and Bush is hated more in California than any other state, how can you go wrong? :)

San Diego is beautiful. I loved it there. If you've got the money to live the way you want, go for it. Housing can be steep.

You're right on the point that political ideological fervor is comparative.

However, you overlook the fact that the "Reagan Revolution" came from California along with other conservative ideological nuggets like Prop 13 and 3 Strikes laws. Orange County, with is Bob Dornan types, have always been near the forefront of conservatism in the US.

Plus it also depends on your definition of conservatism--fiscal conservatives versus social conservatives... paleo (Goldwater era) conservatives vs. neo-conservatives.
