A noted Jewish leader has said Mel Gibson is "seriously infected" with anti-Semitism, based on comments the actor recently made in defense of his upcoming film, The Passion of Christ.


"I think he's infected -- seriously infected -- with some very, very serious anti-Semitic views," Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), said of Mr. Gibson.

Mr. Foxman made his remarks during a panel discussion Thursday in New York City. The discussion was titled, "Mel Gibson's The Passion: A Conversation on Its Implications for Jews and Christians."

"He's got classical anti-Semitic views," Mr. Foxman told CNSNews.com, in an interview. "If he can say that there is a cabal out there of secular liberal Jews who are trying to blame the Holocaust on the Catholic Church, that's a classic anti-Semitic canard -- that Jews operate in cabals to get their way."

William Donohue, president of the conservative Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, criticized Mr. Foxman for his views.

"I would regard this as the most singular irresponsible statement we have heard yet from any one of Mel Gibson's critics," Mr. Donohue told the online news service.

Mr. said the comments about Gibson and his movie at the ADL panel discussion are what you would "expect from people in an asylum."

He also said he had seen the film, but noted none of the three panelists in New York had done so.

i read about the film a while back. considering its extreme lack of commercial potential, it seemed to me that the only reason to make it was to put out an anti-semitism message. i was pretty disappointed in him.

people are people - we're all the same race and species. if only as a group we could find something better to do than create groups that hate other groups.

It now seems that if you say anything that is critical blacks you are racist, or woman you are a sexist and anything against Jews amkes you Anti-Semetic. Is that a sign of confidence or lack of?

Wow, what a fucked up comment! Mel Gibson is a devout Catholic, and he made this video for the followers of this faith and to spread the word of the man he worships. For you to claim it has no other purpose than to spread 'anti-semitism' is insane and offensive.

And what are you talking about 'lack of commercial potential'? Do you realise how big the Catholic (and Christian in general for that matter) Church's are? When the trailer for this film went online it immediatly put several sites offline! It was one of the largest viewed video trailers in human history.

Anyway, your comments about this are fucked up on so many levels. A man makes a movie about the death of Jesus Christ (someone who he worships), a film which you have not even seen, and you slander it with the words 'anti-semite'.

I'm not religious and I want to see it. I like myths. To me, this movie is just like a movie about the Greek or Roman gods. Not religious, but darned entertaining. :)

Mel Gibson's movie won't be in english, it'll be in the language that Jesus spoke with. So I doubt it'd be popular. Actually it may now that some people are going on and on about anti-semitism.

This movie is going to make a killing. It's pre-booked a couple of weeks here. Mel Gibson did a heck of a job building up to it's release.

It's not "against", it's anything vaguely negative. Ridiculous situation especially in America. It's like, are people really that sensitive? And if I don't like you, so what? Silly to slap labels like bigot, racist, sexist and anti-anything on people for differing views. Fucking thought police going around fining you for not being politically correct.

PC is heavily contrary to human nature. It attempts to force people to be something they are not. You know, like nice and stuff. We are an insular, cliquish, discrimatory, intolerant, self-centered, selfish, if-it-ain't-about-me-it-ain't-important species. So why all the self-hate? lol

Its a fucking movie and the more people bitch about it the more publicity its getting so I'd be stoked if I was Mel Gibson. It will be a huge film regardless, even if purely based on its subject matter but from what I have seen it looks like it is quite a quality film.
