How old is your PC or motherboard? It might not be equipped with USB 2 ports.

If your motherboard doesn't have USB2.0 ports, you might be able to find an IDE-USB controller that fits into a PCI slot, but it just isn't worth it.
For very large files, or formatting, USB is not a good way to go. USB is great when you have 60MB of images and you want to take them off your camera's compact flash and get 'em on your drive. Well anyway.. if you can, I'd go out get drop some cash on a motherboard/CPU/memory combination that'll give you 4 (or 6) USB 2.0 ports, two IDE channels and two SATA channels.. SATA is Serial ATA, which controls hard drives and is many times faster than current IDE cables. My setup is an Asus A7N8X mother board & AMD 2600+ CPU w/ 512MB PC3200 RAM and 80GB EIDE UltraATA drive and a 120GB SATA drive.. it'll run Dreamweaver, Photoshop, ACDSee, ICQ, AIM, mIRC and 8 IE windows and absolutely fly. Built the whole thing for less than $500 from newegg.com. |
A USB 2.0 PCI card will be about $ 25.00 on Ebay.
A hard drive enclosure USB 2.0 will be about 45.00 on Ebay. Then you are set. I use 3 of those ( 160 gigs each) to transfer video files, Fast and stable. Firewire is also very good ( need card and enclosure). Good luck |
