Racism??

Actually, given my readings of the Internet in Japan, my guess would be that they maintain close control of what happens on the Internet (Well the Japanese bits anyhow) - they've got a lot of rules & regulations that don't exist elsewhere with regards to what you can sell, and it all has to be government approved, so I'd say this would extend to domain names as well...:2 cents:

no racism.....................all in good fun

i eat too much rice myself

I don't think you do or at least there must be a way to get around it because my brother owns a lot of them.

You can either be a resident there or, own a corporate entity in the country itself oh and, its not just Japan that has these restrictions other countries do to including Canada.

Maybe because it is a Japanese domain?

J B 11-01-2003 10:11 PM

Everybody can register .jp domains.
http://www.japanregistry.com/

Only .co.jp/.ne.jp/etc. domains are restricted to Japanese companies.

AmeliaG 11-02-2003 02:25 PM

Apparently you just have to have a Japanese presence, kinda like you have to get someone to vouch for you to get an apt in Tokyo, but it is not necessarily as complicated as setting up a whole corp or anything. Dot coms are more popular there too though.

Yeah... it constantly pisses me off that I'd have to go to all the trouble of setting up a US presence just to get some of those cheap .us domains.

Tease 12-02-2003 03:59 AM

why do you have to be canadian to register a canadian domain?

unconnected 12-02-2003 06:38 AM

Why do I have to have a UK presence to setup a .uk domain?

quantum-x 12-02-2003 08:04 AM

because you just do.

It's up toa country to decide.

same with .au's, yet with .au's, they make the fuckers expensive.
