I'm having an argument with someone about "mainstream", what do you think?

Someone, I won't mention names *cough* is telling me, that mainstream refers to NON-adult sites. When I say mainstream in this industry, I am referring to sites that aren't niches and just mainstream porn, such as boy/girl and just girl type of sites. Am I misinformed about what mainstream is? :uhoh someone enlighten me please :1orglaugh

TurboTrucker 11-01-2003 04:28 AM

Well it could be both. You could say mainstream adult sites and that would mean regular non niche sites. If you just say mainstream sites, I think of that as non-porn.

Libertine 11-01-2003 04:29 AM

You're wrong, they're right. :2 cents:

chodadog 11-01-2003 04:29 AM

Mainstream = non-adult
Mainstream Adult = your typical boy/girl.

AmeliaG 11-01-2003 04:29 AM

I think most people mean nonadult when they say mainstream here. I usually say mainsteam adult when I am referring to general naughty stuff, as opposed to the arena I am most directly in.

Digipimp 11-01-2003 04:31 AM

My impression when saying mainstream was that it meant non adult or at least non nude stuff that could be marketed to the general public. If you say mainstream adult that's different, but just mainstream makes me think non adult.

Furious_Female 11-01-2003 04:32 AM

Yeah when I am discussing adult sites only and mention mainstream, I am referring to non-niche sites. Mainstream non adult is a whole other thing. But mainstream can be both adult and non-adult right? :winkwink:

Ok being you opted to point yourself out, you knew I was talking about ADULT sites on an adult industry board, what would non-adult sites have to do with anything, when I don't even run any? :mad:

You're missing my point, you're on an adult industry board, but many people on here do mainstream biz. Also many people use mainstream non nude sites to filter to nude sites or use dating sites which are considered mainstream to filter to adult. Geeez I'm about to take a beating.:glugglug

"mainstream adult" = adult
"mainstream" = non-adult

If you say "I run a few mainstream sites", you're saying you run a few non-adult sites.

I understand there are mainstream non adult sites. But my question was directed towards adult sites and you knew that.

Actually I never even said mainstream about anything in the argument... my point is, that mainstream can also be adult and not just non adult. If I don't refer to it as mainstream adult when having an adult site convo, it's usually because I am too lazy to type both words. :glugglug

Some would say that being technical in this biz can be an asset. Right now I'm getting my ass kicked for it though.

Depends... using it in a meaningless conversation at 7:00AM isn't much of an asset :winkwink:

You said "mainstream" in this thread. Since I can't read your little republican mind, I have no idea what you did or didn't say in the original argument.

It's only adult if you specify it as "adult". Otherwise, just about everyone will think you're talking about non-adult. If laziness gets in the way of clarity, that's a problem.

Well I was having a conversation about adult sites only with someone that knew I didn't have non adult sites... So I didn't think I had to be that specific.
