How do you get full whois info legitimately?

There are a lot of whois places on the net like:

whoisd.com
whois.net
allwhois.com
betterwhois.com

The list goes on...

I have some ideas for a value-added whois, but I'm curious how you go about getting access to the databases?

I know how to get the Z' files.... but how do you get access to the whois db?

Or does verisign control this for everyone & the people above are just running queries through them?
