Server question..............

Ok see my uncle is a mainstream guy but has a 2k3 windows machine in his office collecting dust. Whats the pros and cons of using this machine. I dont see anyone using them in adult. Obviously for reasons unknown to me. I am no server expert so can anyone tell me the deal on these. Ultimately would save me MEGA cash every month. Thoughts? :glugglug

preferably we push unix FreeBSD

but we host alot of clients who use W3K

I would suggest going with what you know best, if you know unix or linus i'd do a fresh install on that server and be done with it.

The problem with using a Win2K server is you won't be able to use most scripts, you won't be able to use .htaccess so anyone can hotlink your images. Windows servers also can't handle the loads a Unix / linux can.

Linux/FreeBSD is often recommended for easy maintenance, unless you have some applications running in windows.

The problem with a windows server for adult sites is that your going to have to buy more software to do what you want. If you want to start a membership site, you need to buy some software to password protect the areas properly. Most software for Windows will cost you. Most software for Linux will more in likely be free or cheap. There is also more software out there to run a paysite on Linux compared to Windows.

Bottom line is that it will cost you money everytime you want to add software on that Windows box. On a linux it will be free or cheap.

Doesn't take away the fact a lot of PHP/CGI scripts won't run on a Windows system.

Actually it depends on how the server is administered. Many people on this board will tell you about their windows machines running 50 mb/s and above.

Freebsd is much better as far as I'm concerned but there are people that can make windows boxes dance also.

Here's an honest review:

I've used win2k, and experimented with 2k3, and I used them for a long time.

I recently installed Gentoo Linux, and let me tell you, it is the best thing i've ever done with my servers. It has some great feautres, and you learn so much installing it.

Windows is great for small sites, that don't get but maybe 50 hits a day -- if that. And keeping nothing really important on the site (for obvious reasons).

Again: as they have said, do what you know best. If you have some spare time, learn BSD or Gentoo :) You will thank yourself later :P

win 2003

pros: intuitive enough for you to figure out how most stuff works.

cons: most likely will constantly be the target of exploitation attempts
