Sony Viao Notebooks?

anyone got one, and are they worth the investment? Durable? Reliable? Responsive?

Yes?

No?

SPEAK DAMMIT!

chronic avenger 10-27-2003 03:45 AM

Durable? Reliable? Responsive? = yes

I like mine

gin 10-27-2003 03:47 AM

for laptops get a HP laptop, mine has been on 24/7 for the past 8 months and it still runs smooth

Amputate Your Head 10-27-2003 03:48 AM

HP? Really? I wouldn't have thought HP for a notebook.......

hmmm........

TheViper 10-27-2003 03:51 AM

Buy a Dell Lattitude. :thumbsup

Jamie 10-27-2003 05:09 AM

I've had my sony for over a year, no problems. Plus they have the nicest screens, clear and bright.

The first thing you want to do is replace the RAM, depending on the model. Mine shipped with 100mhz ram versus the 133mhz it can accept. Plus the upgrade to 512 is well worth the difference in speed.

But then again mine is a year old, p3 1ghz.

Solid notebook IMO :thumbsup

dont go with HP, Dells, etc.

I am using Sony Vaio laptops since 2001 and I can tell you just one thing - THEY ROCK! kinda expensive but the design is awesome! no one can beat them in that...

the only disadvantage is that their support sucks at time...

worth the money!

Don't!

they are a piece of shit. I have one. flemsy case, cheap parts. The only benefit to a dell is the support.

Sharky 10-27-2003 05:18 AM

Err. wait. I just realized I have an Inspiron, not a lattitude

Justin L.A. 10-27-2003 05:30 AM

I like my Sony Vaio but support is poor. Don't try to upgade an old Vaio from Win98 to XP. Drivers are a bitch. Proprietary hardware...

Veterans Day 10-27-2003 06:12 AM

I like my Dell honestly, no problems to date. 2 years old

BlueDesignStudios 10-27-2003 06:15 AM

My Vaio has been good to me... :2 cents:

MaxCandy 10-27-2003 06:24 AM

love my vaio due to sony?s video camera and computer integration

on my 3rd one now,

but even I would buy a dell or Toshiba if I did not use this alot

fsfaz 10-27-2003 07:00 AM

Toshiba

FreeHugeMovies 10-27-2003 07:57 AM

Yep, Toshiba has the best track record for laptops. This is why I purchased this lappy.

Monitor is great when traveling. Throw in a DVD and watch movies and watch the time go by. This baby has 3 fans. :)

s9ann0 10-27-2003 08:02 AM

yea they good and thye last but I broke mine a few times and getting it fixed is expensive so get a cover plan with it

PersianKitty 10-27-2003 08:06 AM

I love my Dell Inspiron 8500.

Nydahl 10-27-2003 08:09 AM

we have 1 fucking old dell here but my friend has some sony stuff and told me its great

Daymare 10-27-2003 08:13 AM

I have a dell inspiron 8200 for 8 months now and it's awesome. Had a 266mhz Vaio a few years ago and it sucked ASS. Horrible screen, bad support, mobo on it fried after 2 years, parts were cheap, hdd was slower than hell and it sucked for typing.

So far the dell is perfect.

DamnGoodRatio 10-27-2003 08:19 AM

Check to see what touchpad it ships with. The Alps pads are horrible (this is usually the pad on the smaller ones) and the synaptics pads are awesome. I have a V505Bx and love the weight, size and bright screen, but the pad is horrible. I had the larger one, I think the GRZ series, and it was a nice machine except for the 8+ lbs weight.

Rex 10-27-2003 08:20 AM

I firiggin' love mine!

DamnGoodRatio 10-27-2003 08:21 AM

Shit, one thing I forgot. If you are going to be photoshopping on it, check a JPG on the screen in the store. Some of the TFTs don't do skin tones well at all. Just my $.02

Theo 10-27-2003 08:23 AM

vaio are very good

My Sony has been good! Had a problem with the keyboard... dropped a glass of beer on it..... Sent it back to Sony's Tech. Support and they had it back to me the same week and charged me nothing to fix it.... :)

They have good customer service, which means a lot!!!

angeleyes 10-27-2003 03:05 PM

Mine was a piece of shit.....

I've had Toshiba Tecras, IBMs, Dells and Sony was the worse of all of them. My Tecra was the best.... Never had one problem with it even after the physical abuse I put it through. :2 cents:

feN 10-27-2003 03:08 PM

i got a toshiba..great display, great design, reliable...
not cheap though :/

boneprone 10-27-2003 03:12 PM

Ill put it in the oven and see how durable it is.

Give me 20 minutes.
Ill put it to the BP test.

Had Dell Latitude CP since april 98 and never had a problem. Only use it now to check email on aol account as it only has a 233Mhz processor and 64Mb of ram so cannot haddle modern aps..

Stevie Ward 10-27-2003 03:15 PM

go with the vaio. I know a ton of people who have them, and nobody has ever had a problem with them. I just switched to one and love it.....

Ice 10-27-2003 03:16 PM

Im looking at the new Alienware Area-51 in silver.... looks fuckin sweet. Bit pricy though. A buddy of mine works at HP...says he can get me a good deal. If not I might consider the Alienware

The Truth Hurts 10-27-2003 03:25 PM

viao rocks.

but as was stated, thier support blows ass.

had a bad power supply (known issue on one model), I asked them to just send the replacement, cause i could have made the change in 5 minutes, but they said "we don't do things that way".

So I wait for the box, pack it up, wait for pickup, and get the thing back like 9 days later.

Sad part is, they said if you don't want the system restored to factory state so on the work order, cause apparently they do it by default.

So i do that, and I taped huge notices all over the entire case, NOT to make any changes within the system, taping all the drives shut, and saying to just replace the supply.

9 days later, it came back, not restored completely, but they changed a some shit they had no reason to to change...
mostly appearance wise..

Next time i'll be sure to pull the fucking hard drives.

Other than that, their systems rock.

Hey localG - Is that a PCG-FX220? If it is and the motherboard still works hit me up - jake at naughtyallie dot com. I've got one that I only used for about 13 months (that's right, less than 30 days after the fucking warranty expired) and the mother board went out on me! Havent gotten around to replacing it yet.

I haven't had a chance to read the thread except for your question and the answer is they are awesome. I bought two of them... I would recommend the P4 2.6 GHZ with the 15 inch screen for speed....I maxed it out at 1 GB of RAM....Then I got the 17 inch P4 1.8 GHZ and maxed that one with 1 Gb of RAM as well. I use them both for traveling....If you use Sony cameras they are awesome:thumbsup
