Open Heart Surgery, how long before you can go home ??

My dad had open heart surgery and had 5 by-passes. First of all, the doctors said he could go home anywhere from 4-7 days, but hell, today we went down to visit him and he was ready to come home after ONLY 2 DAYS of recovery, actually, it was a few hours less than 2 days.

Me and the rest of my family are worried about that because it seems pretty early to be released, but the hospital said that he should be ok. What scares me is that my dad doesn't seem himself yet, he can't talk to well yet and he's still pretty weak and in a bit pain, but the hospital gave him the ok to go home.

What would you think ??? Heck, when my wife had our last daughter c-section, she was in the hospital longer than 2 days and my dad had open heart and got sent home before that.

My mother had a triple by pass last year she wanted to go home the next day.

When I had my heart attack if they hadn't kept me on morphine for 3 days I would have gone home right away too.

a week seems to long ... they already did the repair.

My father had a Quad and was released the next day, and the two triples he had too!

So todays is good!

i had a 4 way bypass about 3 years ago and the whole thing was only about a week.

only problems with heart surgery is they slit your breast bone and it hurts like hell after the surgery for months.

when your dad gets out of the hospital he Must walk a few times a day to exercise his heart and to keep fluid out of his lungs.

but the fact that he wants out the the hospital is good. Some people get real shook up when they have heart surgery and don't want to do anything (thats bad)

it happened, get past it and get on with your life.

its the only way.

good luck

That's crazy, my dad just got out of the hospital TODAY after a triple bypass. He was in there since Monday morning.

Only trouble with him is that the doctor thinks there was a small hole poked in his lung during surgery.

They have him on all sorts of pain killers. They picked up about $300 worth of medication on the way home.

He doesn't look so good right now. Hopefully he'll start feeling better soon.

Good luck with your father.

Thanks for all of your comments guys, I appreciate them :) also, thanks for the get well wishes.

I hope that my dad will be alrite. One thing that I didn't mention was that 10 days ago, he also had a pretty good sized heart attack, so they did angio plastiek (however you spell that) to clear his main artery and then they kept him in there until Wednesday to have the surgery.

I thought that getting out 2 days later was early, it sounds like a lot of you have had the same experiences.

My sister went in recently for heart valve replacement, and a few other things remaining from a childhood defect. Pretty major stuff involving inside the heart work. She was out in about 3-4 days. Her first operation in the late 70s required a 2-3 week stay. Amazing.

When I was 25 I had some major open heart surgery and was allowed to go home after 2 weeks. These days they shove you out the door 5 to 7 days after surgery. I still remember the pain I was in 1 week after the op and could not imagine being sent home so early..:(

Bypass surgery is relatively 'easy' these days. If they used the less invasive methods, they are usually in intensive care for a day or two, with a total hospital stay of 3 to 5 days. The amount of time varies based on how well things went. I'd suspect since he was released so quickly that surgery went very well.
