If you get the real stuff from France (no labels or branded shite) its a killer, a small glass full gets you so wasted :thumbsup

The stuff they sell in retail outlets and liquor stores though is processed and doesnthold anything to true Absinthe :Graucho

I got two large bottles of the homemade green fairy as a bachelor gift...they went very fast...

Absinthe #1
1 pint vodka2 tsp crumbled wormwood (dried)
2tsp anise seed1/2 tsp fennel seed
4 cardomom pods1 tsp majoram
1/2 tsp ground coriander2 tsp chopped angelica root
1 2/3 cups sugar syrup
Place vodka in large jar with tight fitting lid. Add wormwood and shake
well; steep 48 hrs and strain out. Crush seeds and pods in mortar. Add them
and all remaining spices to vodka and steep in a warm place 1 week.
Filter and sweeten. (The sugar syrup mentioned above is your standard
simple syrup.)
Absinthe #2
1 tsp crumbled wormwood1 cup vodka
2 Tbsp chopped peppermint leaves
1 piece of lemon peel, 3/4"x2"
1/3-1/2 cup sugar syrup
Steep wormwood in vodka for 48 hours. Strain out and add peppermint
leaves and lemon peel. Steep for 8 days, strain nd sweeten. Smells good
but is more bitter than #1.
Absinthe Wine
All herbs are dried.
2 tsp peppermint2tsp dried wormwood
2 tsp thyme2 tsp lavender
2 tsp hyssop2 tsp majoram
2 tsp sage2 pints port
Steep herbs one week, filter and bottle. My notes describe this as
"bitter, aromatic and potent".

"It was traditionally served with ice water and a cube of sugar; the sugar cube was placed on a slotted "absinthe spoon", and the water was drizzled over the sugar into the glass of absinthe (typically in a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio). The sugar helped take the bitter edge from the absinthe, and when the water is drizzled into the the liquor it all turns milky greenish-white (the effect is called "louche")."

Couldn't have said it better...i have a friend that drinks it in pint glasses. I worry he won't be around to be a friend too long if he does that often. I have managed a shot glass once or twice but frankly it hurts to drink it.

It was illegal over here but I think the ban came off fairly recently because now everyone seems to be trying it.

I love black licorice but couldn't do a lot of it...do Sambucca instead. It is also a different kind of drunk, tastes totally like aniseed and I can drink loads of it in the right setting. Black Sambucca is even richer in taste.

Absinthe burns but in a good way.

The active psychotropic properties come from the wormwood, and from anise or fennel. The recipe above won't quite do it right BTW. Those alkaloids work on the same receptors in the brain as marijuana.

I've put away quite a bit of that shit and never hallucinated, but I do think the drunk is quite "heady" and promotes a wandering, somewhat introspective mind.

All in all, a nice little treat for rainy days.

i had some when i was in london. when we did it we put sugar in the shit in a big glass, mixed it around, and lit it on fire then put it out before we did the shot.

I read somewhere that the hallucinations came from the absinthe being aged in copper vats and poisoning people... or something like that.

There are websites that will sell it and ship to the US. My fiance has bought it a few times from a few different places. I think it smells nasty and tastes like Nyquil, but he loves it. It's his only vice so I don't complain much. :) Now if only I could find a place to buy a big bag of pot so we both could be happy. :winkwink:

wormood + alcohol = basic effect. all the rest is just flavoring. wormwood is easy enough to find, but be careful because it's a convulsant and poison. people actually use it in moderation to get rid of parasites like tapeworms and liver flukes. there's a reason france, and many other countries outlawed the stuff about the same time as opium.

i need to get some good stuff shipped, here in australia absinthe sux! the gov has put a limit of 10mg to every 100kg so its all shithouse but the alcohol content you cant get anything below 70

Everything from the active ingredient, taste and strength varies but one thing doesn't - the extortionate price. At least thats true for the UK anyway.

im not sure where you all got your information but im pretty sure real absinthe is outlawed all over europe. The absinthe you can buy online and in stores etc isnt the real deal.. if im not mistaked they still make it in switzerland though, illegaly :thumbsup

Bars in Northern Ireland can only let you buy two shots of absinthe, serving people anymore than that is illegal

I have to say drinking Absinthe is pretty damm harse but it does get you very very drunk within minutes of drinking the stuff which is a nice plus :) The most I've drank of the stuff was 8 shots which had a few friends of mine outside running through peoples gardens so it can make you do some crazy shit depending on the person of coarse

Its not that expensive. £20 a bottle isn't too much considering how little you need to drink

I kinda like absinthe but I loathe licorice. If you mix it with enough fruit juice or grape Kool Aid, you will be a Philistine, but you also won't have to taste the licorice.

Last time I had absinthe, someone slipped me a roofie, so I have less positive associations with it now. Fortunately I had someone there who could bring my nearly unconscious ass and another friend who got it too the hell out of there. The third friend of mine who was roofied apparently drove herself home, but doesn't remember it, but she is tougher than me or the guy who got it. We were hungover for three days, but the people who just got the absinthe only felt it the next day.

I thought it used to be illegal in the UK for a while. But I did manage to buy 3 shots of the 85% stuff on my 18 birthday which I very much regretted :(

You can get it pretty cheaply in Spain. A liter for like 12 euro's, well worth the money :glugglug
