-----------------------------------------
WASHINGTON (Oct. 23) - Federal officials arrested more than 300 illegal workers at 61 Wal-Mart stores across the country early Thursday morning and searched the Bentonville, Ark., office of one of the retail chain's corporate executives.

The workers arrested were members of cleaning crews which the company hired through a contractor. All were people in the country illegally, said a federal official on condition of anonymity.

The arrests occurred as the workers were finishing their night shift and took place at 61 stores in 21 states.

The arrests stem from a November 1998 investigation done in conjunction with the Pennsylvania attorney general's office. In that investigation, officials also targeted contractors and subcontractors used by Wal-Mart to clean stores.

Employers are required to check forms known as I-9's, filled out by every new employee, and keep the forms for a specified period of time. An employer can face civil and criminal penalties if the employer knowingly hired illegal immigrants or doesn't comply with the I-9 regulations.

The people arrested were detained at local immigration offices, the official said. If they had no previous criminal record, they were released with notices to appear before immigration judges.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is the world's largest retailer, based in Bentonville, Ark.

Arrests were made in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

Wal-Mart is always on my boycott list. They screw not only their non-unionized workers, but also their poor suppliers mainly in China. To supply for Wal-Mart and to make money from the dirt-cheap prices they offer, I guess one can only get the products from a prison or hire child labor.

I think who should be arrested are those company executives, not those poor workers.

What in the world is our govt thinking with this bust?

What a waste of resources to arrest a bunch of night shift cleaning people at Wal-Mart.

Who in the heck is making these ass backwards decisions to waste our money on this bullshit?

Does anyone give a flying fuck if a bunch of cleaning people at Wal-Mart are illegal?

The stupidest part of all they were released if they promised to appear in immigration court.

Obviously you've never picked tomatoes for 12 hours straight in the scorching sun.

Without illegals to harvest our food the agriculture industry would collapse in this country and that means food prices would go through the roof.

Rinaldo 10-23-2003 10:38 AM

think they should focus more money on child porn and CC theft than damn 300 walmart employees...

asuna 10-23-2003 10:38 AM

Yeah I laughed when I read they let them finish their shift, altho it'snot like they were big money launderer's or dealers or whatever... if they start cracking down on all illegals, no one's lawn would get mowed either

vicki 10-23-2003 10:39 AM

jeez folks, lighten up! I just thought it was funny that they called in the feds to do something this rediculous

personally i'd prefer they go rope all those bogus begars holding signs at stoplights rather than people actually WORKING and paying taxes off their wages ..

Fletch XXX 10-23-2003 10:42 AM

its because walmarts are not union and are hiring ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS as workers. here in cali you have mexicans working at walmart who do NOT EVEN speak english properly.

you people have no clue sitting in little white american towns in the backwoods.

fuck giving people jobs that do not even belong in this country in the first place.

'Officials say investigators are concerned about a pattern of Wal-Mart using contractors who employ illegal aliens and that Wal-Mart has, in fact, continued to use contractors who have been convicted of hiring aliens in the past.'

Over 1 million illegal immigrants hit california every year, you dont think this shit affects us all?

think again.

fuck these people, let them come in the legal way instead of being ILLEGAL ALIENS.

WiredGuy 10-23-2003 10:44 AM

I live smack dab in the heart of Texas so I'm very familiar with illegals and green carders (conditional legals)

I have to agree that most of them are hard arse working folks, they do back breaking tasks for very little $$

FATPad 10-23-2003 10:48 AM

Peaches 10-23-2003 10:50 AM

Perhaps I'm reading this wrong, but from what I can tell, Walmart had ZERO responsibility regarding this as they hired a contractor for the cleaning.

If I hire Molly Maids to clean my house, I'm not legally responsible for checking I-9's of THEIR employees.

Not to mention, at least where I live, WM pays their employees more than the unionized grocery workers make and WM provides more benefits. Ditto with non-unionized Publix in Atlanta. :)

I think this is bigger than most of you are comprehending.

Walmart is doing some major things right now and causing major sturs, this is only old news resurfacing from old 1998 crap.

The whole Walmart is non union and hires ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS is one thing.

There are people outside all southern california grocery stores right now holding signs demanding benefits because they are taking 50% of them away because of the new Walmarts etc.

Walmart pays 3 bucks less than regular stores and is KNOWN for hiring illegals, and they do so continually even after their 'body supplier' has been busted for selling illegals.

i never expect people to know current events but I think this one is a bit bigger than most know or have even thought about.

the only reason I have is because I cant go to a grocery store, and havent been able to really grocery shop in like 2 weeks now it seems.

they are protesting EVERYWHERE.

Again - where in this has Walmart hired these people? Funny how they aren't getting bent out of shape regarding the company who actually HIRED the illegals. Nah, that wouldn't sell as many papers as the name "Walmart" in the same article as "illegal aliens". :winkwink:

And also again, Walmart in my area pays MORE than any other grocery or drugstore (about $.50-$1 an hour more).

Not to mention, we're talking about non-skilled labor here. Just because unions have artificially inflated the payscale of non-skilled labor doesn't mean that someone paying less is wrong.

Unions or the government dictating what businesses should pay their employees is absurd. Would you want laws passed that tell you that you MUST pay your programmer $100K a year because there are programmers making that much?

If Walmart's not paying their employees what the employees think they deserve, the employees will leave and work for someone who pays higher. Welcome to capitalism. :thumbsup

You missed it all. YOu live in Georgia, far from the cry of california dear.

Its NOT about Walmarts employees, its about the Walmart 'SUPERGROCERY CHAIN' coming to California and Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons' saying well hey, If walmart doesnt have to pay as much and doesnt have to give benefits maybe we will lower it all too.'

In regards to Walmart 'not hiring the illegals'

did you miss the part where it says that THE REASON they are being pursued now, (again READ this shit is from 1998) is because they CONTINUE to hire them and USE THE SAME COMPANIES THAT WERE BUSTED FOR SELLING THEM ILLEGAL EMPLOYEES.

anyhow, I dont really care to bicker about 'Walmart' of all shit with people half way across the world from me. ;)

This is bigger than most of you will be able to realize as I said.

Tell you what - you convince America to pay more for items they're getting the low prices on at Walmart, and I'm sure you'll see the payscales increase. :thumbsup

Being a cashier is a job a 14 year old can do (and many ARE 14). It's a minimum wage job. Why SHOULD they make $8-10 an hour, plus a 401K, plus $200+ a month in health insurance benefits?

Everyone wants it both ways - the consumers want items for cheap, but they want businesses to pay $$$$ for their unskilled workers. Economics 101 says it just doesn't work that way. :winkwink:

Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world generating $245 Billion in annual sales.

They have 3,200 stores in the US and 1,100 outside the US.

On the biggest shopping day of the year right after Thankgivings Wal-Mart does about $1.4 Billion in sales.

Wal-Mart is now the largest supermarket in the US. Most people don't know that fact.

They are the second largest employer in the US after the Federal Government with over 1.3 Million people on their payroll.

18 Million people shop at Wal-Mart each day. Over 100 Million per week.

Wal-Mart sells more magazines, books, videos and CD's than any other retailer.

If you are a vendor lucky enough to sell to Wal-Mart and your stuff sells, you can become a multi-millionaire from just this one account.

There's a reason why more and more businesses are leaving CA. CA is one of the most hostile states to have a business in. Coddling their illegals and unskilled labor citizens are merely drops in the bucket of reasons why companies dislike doing business in CA. Just as the unions are pricing their workers out of jobs, so is CA. Just make sure you keep all your residents THERE instead of letting them into the rest of the country when the CA economy collapses. :thumbsup

For the same reason farm owners do.

As I always try to relay to my mexican brothers I am ALL FOR legal immigration to this country.
But doing so illegal will never be right regardless of the whole 'american dream' thing man.

I sat outside a grocery store yesterday talking to nothing but mexicans ABOUT THIS VERY SUBJECT

they are against the ILLEGALS TAKIGN THEIR FUCKING JOBS.

This is a big problem, and people who do not care are part of it.

How about Germany, think I can just got here and start working?

This is not just an american problem.

its everywhere.

people just seem to get bent out of shape over it because of how large texas and california are and since they are both so heavily mexican populated it of course rasises the levels.

but this is not a mexican epidemic.

Its in France with the fucking arabs and gypsies, its everywhere. You cant just go to another country and start working no matter what color you are.

There are just as many ILLEGAL WHITES as they are mexicans anyhow. ANyone with a brain can see this.

No, I'm defending a business's right to pay their employees what they're worth. :) I own my own business and have owned several before this one. I don't appreciate others telling me the value of MY employees to MY business. That's for ME to decide and it's up the EMPLOYEE to decide if what I pay them is appropriate or if they can make more elsewhere. I realize it's a hard concept for many to comprehend, but neither the government nor unions have any right to dictate the pay and benefits a private business offers to their employees. :thumbsup
