It would depend on your relationship with the friend. Is it the groom, bride or do you know both of them? I find the best way is to simply ask if they're registered for gifts anywhere since a lot of newly weds have lots of expenses to consider and would rather enjoy something they need rather than a random gift. Otherwise, cash is always a safe bet or some kind of appliance. But it really depends on your relationship with them and your price range.
