as a general rule though i much prefer to do a retainer fee and its good for your company to have a semi-full time programmer on staff with a monthly retianer.

Geeez, he wasn't talking about people who join your site, they already have a user/pass combo, why in the world would they hack it? He is talking about password sites and hackers, freeloaders, hotlinkers etc etc.. And maybe hijackers which would make you partially right.

yea the funny thing is that with programming you really do get what you pay for. if not in quality (as if you are hiring a programmer you probably dont even notice the quality) it is in trust, respect and support.

it is really hard for me to compete in this biz even though i have the years of programmng in this biz under my belt (i started at igallery in 1996) but i have to charge $75 an hour for hourly work whereas you can obviously get it cheaper.
i prefer to go to the retainer basis because what i ifigure i bring to the table is a long lasting relationship where you can trust me to be around in the long run. and if i fuck you over i'm in the industry and so you see me at the shows and you know the people i do so you could destroy me whereas somebody in the republic of georgia you will probalby never see.

I could list the number of large adult companies I've seen broken through PHP scripting - rarely in the member's area. And even those times, it was trivial to exploit to gain access.

I'm not talking about gaining access to your member's area, I'm talking about gaining access to *your entire box*. If you can't grasp THIS concept, then don't even bother trying to code.

That'd take 15 seconds to exploit to execute arbitrary PHP. Which then with a bit of system() trickery (or even using that mail() thing to bypass safe_mode) you're in with the Apache user.

good scripting or programming will cost you around $40 - $50 an hour. Ofcourse you can get it cheaper but will it be better?
