Three jabs of genetically engineered white blood cells into cancer-riddled mice left them disease-free, paving the way for human trials.

A research paper to be published soon reveals cancer that had spread to the lungs, liver, lymph nodes and bones vanished in most mice after treatment.

The anti-cancer gene developed by the researchers empowers white blood cells to recognise cancer cells, which are normally invisible to them.

White blood cells would be extracted from patients' blood samples and the anti-cancer gene then inserted into them.

The cells would be multiplied in the laboratory and then injected back into patients in one or more jabs.

Once a genetically engineered white blood cell recognises a cancer cell, it will latch on to it and destroy it.

In the latest experiments, every one of 50 mice with secondary lung cancer went into remission and remain so three to eight months later.
